Hello Support, I notice today when I updated Thunderbird program to new version 78.0.1 it started acting strangely, slowing down, not retrieving emails for specified folders, all folders change color to light gray, filters that were created are not responding I surely don't want go back and create them all over again. It has crashed on me several times so far, emails going straight to inbox when it works and not to their folders. Again, very, very slow... I'm using Lenova Computer with windows 10.

Thanks for your time,

Long time user and Donator, David

re :when I updated Thunderbird program to new version 78.0.1

Did this update occur because you have some kind of Updater Software operating on your computer to force an auto update?

Or did you exit Thunderbird, uninstall the previous version of Thunderbird and then download and install Thunderbird 78.0.1 from here: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

I actually did use a updater program and then recently uninstalled it called "patchmypc" This is what is listed in Mozilla Crash Reporter ------ BELOW:

Hello Again, Should I always uninstall the previous version of Thunderbird and then download and install update? I always thought let it just update and that was all no other action. There are probability a few old versions still on my computer in the download file should I delete them or not?

Thanks, David

At the moment if you were using Thunderbird 68.10.0 then the only update that Thunderbird will try to do is to version 68.11.0 as it covers some security fixes.

Thunderbird is not currently auto updating to version 78 until some gremlins have been ironed out.

There has been several reports of Thunderbird updating to 78 and in all of these cases, it was due to an auto updater program.

Usually, if Thunderbird is dealing with the updates, then you let Thunderbird carry on with updates. I would advise, you do not allow any Updater Software to update Thunderbird. Allow Thunderbird to handle it's own updates.

If performing a manual update from 68.11.0 and want to update to the new 78.0.1 before Thunderbird performs the auto update, then it is best to uninstall Thunderbird program and then download and install new version.

regarding a few old versions still on my computer in the download file You can clear out old files from the 'downloads' folder.

I would try uninstalling Thunderbird program, then download the language you want from link below and install to see if there is an improvement. Remember, if your computer is running 32bit make sure to download the 32bit version. If computer is 64 bit, then you can download either 64bit or 32bit version. https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

Regarding the crashes: When you post crash info, we really need just the crash Report ID number which start with bp- as that means I can access the actual full report - and check to see if it has known bug reports associated with it.

Hello Again Toad H., I run into some difficulty installing Thunderbird 68.11.0 it displays the download 78.0.1exe 64-bit. Now I thought for sure I uninstalled the recent one and the only one that I seen in the system. Not sure why this is happening unless registry is corrupted. There is a folder with crash reports , pending pings, profiles I believe I leave this one alone correct?

Thanks again, David

more options

the link I said to use will download the latest version (which is now 78.1.0) to your 'downloads' folder, then run to install the new version.

The profile will have been updated and some files converted to work with versions 78

I did run through it again after I download Thunderbird so far no crashes just the filters are all messed-up not going into their specified location as configured.

Just one other hiccup I'm having with T-Bird, when I send out an email it seems to take longer about up to 12-30 secs at least and that is using small font and no attachments is there an option to speed this up? .. If you need me to I will start a new topic with this question.

Thanks, David

I have been having some similar issues to those described here (odd colours, changes to my selected folders, clicking on a scroll bar or its scroll arrows also checks/unchecks the box/folder/address/etc. next to it, ...).

I only updated because Thunderbird told me there was an update available. There was no mention that this update was a major version change and I just followed the instructions provided. Despite having to uninstall v68, then install the updated version, it continues to install in 32-bit instead of 64-bit, it only works intermittently and there are some very weird goings-on.

An extra unified folder (Templates) has appeared, with the contents including 8 junk folders, 12 Deleted/Bin folders, 27 (just over half of the accounts I now have) Draft folders, 15 Inboxes, 7 Outboxes and 30 Sent folders all appearing in the selection popup as ticked. Not one Template folder was included. It was here that I discovered that as fast as I unticked the check boxes, others were appearing newly ticked. Every time I clicked on the scoll bar, the slider or the up and down arrows of the scroll bar, the aligned check box was being ticked or unticked.

At present, I have only checked a few of the options boxes, such as folder selections in various account settings, but so far it is occurring in all of them. The only way I've found to prevent the unwanted selections is to click on the arrow buttons and move the cursor off the page before releasing the click. While inconvenient, it does work (most of the time). It would also be easier if I could just exclude the templates folder from the unified selection altogether, but that option also seems to have disappeared for the time being.

It has taken me 3 years to finally be remotely comfortable with Thunderbird, having used Windows Live Mail client for well over a decade. Because of this, I deleted the older versions of TB that I had been setting up with and had reached a very good usable state with v68, but because TB had an update to install, I have been put back into the set-up mayhem that TB, and the general e-mail client world, is.

Thanks for listening.

Did you download the 64bit version ? If yes, then perhaps you are refering to where the 64bit was installed. Usually you would expect the 64bit to install in 'Program Files' and 32bit to install in 'Program Files(x86)'. However, this is no longer the case. To help avoid causing profile problems for users when installing 64bit Thunderbird, a decision was made last year to install 64bit into (x86). Random Access re :There was no mention that this update was a major version change Loads of info is always posted in the 'Release Notes' so this is the place to check out what is going on. Thunderbird has always provided this information. https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/78.2.2/releasenotes/ https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/78.0/releasenotes/

This link may be of interest to you. It's all about the new 'Write' window. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/addressing-email

re :An extra unified folder If you select 'View' > 'Folders' > 'Unified' then all accounts and all folders get shown in a 'Unified' view. This means all the default folders for all accounts get shown eg: a unified 'Inbox' with a load of sub Inboxes one for each account. Followed by each account and any manually created folders per account. You cannot select what is and what is not shown in a 'Unified' view.

So, because you say "folders all appearing in the selection popup as ticked." It does not sound like you are talking about 'Unified' folders. Perhaps you are talking about 'subscribed imap folders'. All default server folders are automatically subscribed to be seen.

But you could also be talking about the individual Account Settings > Synchronise & Storage section which relates to what folders download headers or full copies when synchronised.

It is not clear what you are discussing. You would need to be more specific about what you selected so we understand what you are looking at or post an image to help explain.

Random Access Other useful hints: The Lightning Calendar is no longer an addon extension. It is now fully integrated. Account Settings now opens in a new tab not a window. Many of the settings located in 'Options' have been lumped together under 'General', but are otherwise the same as before. You just have to scroll to locate them.

see info: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-thunderbird-78

Folders can be manually given a colour or you can create a 'userChrome.css' file to force an automatic setting of colours. Recently I answered a question about folder colours, so a load of info at this link: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1304612

Hope all this info helps.

It sure looks like they laid an egg with 78. There's many other forum posts describing problems people are having with Thunderbird 78.

I'm going to explore downgrading to the previous version.
