Can't send email if the recipient is not in the addressbook

While ago my Thunderbird started to refuse to send any emails if the recipient is not in my address book. This happened, I guess, after some update, but can't say which one, because I don't monitor Thunderbird updateting so actively.

If I try to send an email to somebody not in my address book, it appears red in the address field and pressing the send button does nothing at all. If I add the address to address book, it sends ok.

Thunderbird does not give any error message or anything. I opened the developer tools - error console and it shows, what went wrong when I press the send button. See the picture.

My information:

Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS 4.4.0-83-generic #106~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jun 26 18:10:19 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 Thunderbird 52.2.1 64bit

Chosen solution

This sounds very similar to this bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1371309

Test: Create a new profile using profile manager. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager

Create an existing mail account for email address click on 'Write' In TO field enter email address - it should be in red because at this point you have not added anything to an address book. click on 'Send'

please report back on results.

From the error message I suspect that Thunderbird is looking for a mailing list, instead of an e-mail address. Did you type the full e-mail address of the recipient, e.g: user@example.com or User Name <user@example.com>

Hi,

All addresses I'm trying are normal addresses and I have typed them correctly and complete. I have used these same addresses for years just havn't been using the address book before this anomalia.

In my personal address book there is two list-addresses and they work fine.

The error message mentions an expansion of Mailing Lists that might be a function of an add-on that expands Mailing Lists (usually done to allow specific list members to be omitted). Whilst you may not be using a Mailing List, the addon may be breaking Thunderbird.

Remove or disable the addon, or run Thunderbird in Safe Mode to check.

I started in debug mode plugins disabled, opened the error console and tried to send to an address not in the address book and the problem exists and the very same error appears in the console.

I seem to have Enigmail and Firetray-extensions enabled and a Flash-plugin, nothing more.
