Chosen solution

The 53.0a1 build you have is a old Nightly channel build from Nov 16, 2016.

The 53.0 version has been on the Aurora development channel since Jan 23, 2017.

Release < Beta (b#) < Aurora (a2) < Nightly (a1)

The Nightly and Aurora development channel builds gets checkins almost every day so they get updates each of those days. This can sometimes cause issues until fixed, finished or reverted in a later build update. A version on Beta channel can get six to twelve builds though 51.0 had fourteen.

If you you do not want to be a Tester and updating frequently then you should use the Release or Beta builds instead.

Let’s do a full clean re-install; Download the current Nightly

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory.

Do Not remove the profiles folder.

Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox program folders by adding .old to them. Do not rename the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done.
