Since I upgraded to Firefox 42, I can't override the options menu appearing in a tab.

When the tabbed options menu first appeared in FF38, I toggled browser.preferences.inContent to false, so options would be displayed in the traditional way as a pop up. Since the latest update, this trick no longer works. I've tried toggling browser.preferences.inContent between true and false, to no avail. If I reset it to the default value, the string disappears from about:config altogether.

Anyone know a way to circumvent this issue?

That dialog no longer exists in Firefox. Perhaps an add-on will revive it.

The browser.preferences.inContent is no longer supported in Firefox 42 and later, so it is not possible to open a standalone window. Bug 1140495 - Remove support for windowed preferences

You can possibly create a button on the Bookmarks Toolbar to the about:preferences page and hold the Shift key and left-click to open the page in a new window.

You can look at the Classic Theme Restorer extension.
