Why is Thunderbird making this connection?
Just installed Thunderbird. Little Snitch (on Mac) alerted me to allow/deny a connection to location.services.mozilla.com
Why is it doing so?

I believe it is used to determine in which country you are located, not to transmit back your exact location. https://location.services.mozilla.com/ itself does have some description.

can't edit above, so to clarify, my question is: Why is TB trying to connect to that server, why does it want my location?

Thanks. Why would it need to know my location, whether exact or not?
