Trouble Sending Messages with Thunderbird - Stuck on "assembling message"

I was away for a week and when I returned I could not get Thunderbird to download new newsgroup messages. I downloaded the new version of Thunderbird 102.2.2 but that only partially fixed the problem. I basically started fresh, but I was able to get new messages again. But right after upgrading to the latest version I noticed I would get an error message when I tried to post a message. I would have to try several times before the message would send. Most recently I have been getting a new message that says, "Status: assembling message…Done" The first couple of times I was able to get the message to go through by hitting cancel then send again. But that stopped working. Now it just shows the "sending message" box without sending.

I searched through help and saw several other people had a similar problem of not being able to send messages after upgrading to a new version, but I did not see a fix.

The other error message I have been receiving is, "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be posted because connecting to the news server failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing connections. Please verify that your news server settings are correct and try again."
