So, someone could be simply inserting your email address, or your display name, into their spammy messages.

If you get one of these messages sent to you in a bounce notice message, check its raw source. I think you'll find a foreign IP address or server, indicating that the sender was not you.

"Hacking" of email accounts is a lot less common than people suppose.
