I previously used my laptop at my sons who has a BT internet account.
Ever since I cannot change my preference for start-up page.
I see under Help, Troubleshooting Information as section "Important Modified Preferences "

browser.sessionstore.upgradeBackup.latestBuildID 20140314220517
browser.startup.homepage http://home.bt.com
browser.startup.homepage_override.buildID 20140314220517

The startup home page I wish to remove and I suspect the override and latestBuildID to also be associated with my problem.

I don't know much about these properties, but I wouldn't think sessionstore has anything to do with it.

Anyway, you should be able to set your startup page and home page by clicking the orange Firefox button in the top left of the window, then under options selecting options. You can then change both of these under the general tab.

I'm familiar with software installed on the machine changing the home page without asking (AVG in my case), but I don't see how your startup page will change back considering your no longer at your son's.

The two buildID prefs that you posted above are only used internally to check which Firefox version you have and should affect the browser.startup.homepage setting that sets the actual home page.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

I have followed your note using "http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved"

I attach a photo of the screen, (screen dump fails to record the Windows Script Host) and a copy of the note pad. also showing an error Essentially it shows that there is an error

Script C:\Users\Brian\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles83pyuckc.default\prefs.js

What change should I make? Note pad fails to load sorry

prefs.js is the file that stores your settings. It seems, to me at least, that prefs is corrupted.

  • Open the profile folder (navigate to C:\Users\Brian\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles83pyuckc.default) and rename prefs.js to prefs.jsOLD. A new prefs.js file will be generated when you open Firefox the next time.

How do I write the change Presently appears to be write protected

You should just be able to rename the file. Right click, click rename, and type out prefs.jsOLD. Next time you open Firefox, prefs.js will populate again.
