Configuring Firefox search bar

Firefox 14.0.1 on Windows XP.

The Firefox search bar is one of the most useful features; and I use it dozens, if not hundreds of times every day. Mainly on Google, and quite a few times on Amazon.

Now recently all Google results are redirected to google.co.jp; with mainly Japanese results. Even if I go to the google, com wesite, it redirects me to google.co.jp

Now I know that I can use http://www.google.com/ncr to prevent redirection.

The question is: how can I modify the Firefox search bar to not redirect me?

Thanks for any help with this!

Chosen solution

Google shouldn't redirect anymore once you've visited the Google.com site, either by clicking the Google.com link (setprefdomain?prefdom=US) at the bottom of the Japanese page or via the /ncr switch.

Make sure that you keep cookies and maybe local storage as well.

Did you try to clear the Google cookies?

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

You may need to create an allow exception to keep the Google cookies.

How is your location reported?

I do not delete any Google cookies.

My IP address is 36.2.x.xxx; yes, that is in Japan, but I do not want my search results in Japanese.

Thank you for your reply. I will double-check that google.com cookies are not accidentally deleted (using CCleaner).

If google.com cookies are already exempt, is there anything I can set in about:config to prevent redirection?

more options

No the redirection is done entirely on the Google servers and only a valid cookie (or the /ncr switch) will prevent Google from doing that if you visit the google.com site.

Thank you very much for the additional information.

I have google.com cookies UserLocale and WebUserlocale, and both are set to 'en'.

It seems that the redirection stopped from occurring. What I think must have happened that another user clicked on 'google.co.jp' at the bottom of the google.com page.

Now I know what to do when that happens again.

Thank you so much for your advice and help!
