Can't locate the localstore.rdf file

Does anyone know where the localstore.rdf file is? I checked in the profile folder, it wasn't there.

Chosen solution

For the toolbar customize you need the browser.uiCustomization.state that is stored in the prefs.js file like posted above. It is probably better not to copy the full prefs.js file, but replace the current browser.uiCustomization.state line with the one in the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop.

What reasons did you have to use the refresh feature in Firefox?

Hello Adam5,

The localstore.rdf file has been deprecated and replaced with xulstore.json ......

What do you want to save, exactly?

  • the xulstore.json file stores details such as positions of windows and which toolbars are displayed
  • button/control layout is stored in prefs.js in the preference named browser.uiCustomization.state which you also can copy from the about:config preferences editor

Let me explain what happend. All I want is to keep my customized toolbar layout. I refresh firefox it resets to the default toolbar layout, that lead me on this thread. So I was reading the thread, and it said, "in your profile f older select localstore.rdf and copy ("Ctrl+C") then paste it aback to make a copy, repeat to create at least one more copy, The original and "localstore - Copy.rdf " and "localstore - Copy (2).rdf" will all be the same, about 4KB to start with. (not 18 KB not 76 KB)" I needed to locate the localstore.rdf file. I could not find it which lead me here.

Well... Every once and a while firefox completely stops opening, and the only solution to this is to uninstall or refresh firefox.

After a Refresh, your old prefs.js file should be on your Windows desktop in a folder named Old Firefox Data that contains your old profile folder.

Please don't "open" or double-click .js files because Windows may execute them as system scripts. Instead, try right-click > Edit on the prefs.js file. (Also, it's often helpful to set Windows not to hide the .js and other common file extensions: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-show-file-extensions-in-windows/).
