BEAR WITH ME I AM OLD...A TECHNOPHOBE. NEW COMPUTER HP. ......WINDOWS 10......E MAIL PROVIDER TALK TALK. but tiscali email address. It was working OK...... but now it says.

MAIL SERVER password required.

Enter the password for John Smith on imap.tiscali.co.uk. So I repeatedly enter password I set up for Talk talk.Press OK. Then ........The current operation on inbox did not succeed.the mail server account for John Smith responded unrecognised imap4 command.

I have changed my password. But nothing seems to work. Very occassionally I can receive e mail/send them ...but most of the time I cannot.

Is it due to my e mail being old tiscali which got amalgamated into Talktalk.?

Thunderbird is easy to use...intuitive. I hate talktalk web mail and windows 10 mail.

Please can anyone help? Please keep it simple. Many thanks.

Thanks for info. re: INCOMING: account3, , (imap) imap.tiscali.co.uk:143, alwaysSTARTTLS, passwordEncrypted re: INCOMING: account4, , (imap) imap.tiscali.co.uk:143, alwaysSTARTTLS, passwordEncrypted

these are not the recommended settings for imap tiscali.co.uk see info: https://help2.talktalk.co.uk/email-settings-imap-pop3

Access the Account Settings and make the following modifications.

  • Right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'
  • Select 'Server Settings'
  • Port : 993
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication method: Normal Password

then select 'Server Settings' for the other mail account. Repeat the above to modify settings.

  • Click on OK

Exit thunderbird Wait a few moments for background processes to complete. Start Thunderbird.

Please post the following information to check server settings.

In Thunderbird

  • 'Help' > 'Troubleshooting Information'
  • Do Not select checkbox' include account names'
  • Click on 'Copy text to clipboard' button
  • In this forum question, right click in a 'Post a Reply' text box and select 'Paste'

This will insert all the information. But some is not required so you can remove all information on fonts and printers but nothing else.

note 'Help' can be located in two places see images as guide.

re :OUTGOING: , smtp.tiscali.co.uk:587, plain, passwordCleartext, true

Access the Account Settings and make the following modifications.

  • Right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'

In left Pane go down to the bottom

  • click on 'Outgoing server (SMTP)

It will show you the list of outgoing servers. There should only be the one as you removed other account.

  • select the outgoing server
  • click on 'Edit'

'Description' is a field name which allows you enter whatever you like to help identify that smtp server. You can edit if you want.

Check the following.

  • Connection Security: STARTTLS
  • Authentication Method: 'Normal Password'
  • User Name: full email address - it must the same as the mail account email address.
  • click on 'OK'
  • click on 'OK'

Then check to see what is stored for passwords.

  • 'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Security' > 'Passwords' tab

click on 'Saved Passwords' button Do you see two lines showing information? One for imap://mail account One for smtp://mail account

  • If yes click on 'Show Passwords' button

Does the User Name show correct email address ? Is password correct? If not correct, right click on line and use 'Edit Password' option completely clear content and retype password

  • click on 'Close'
  • click on 'OK'

Exit thunderbird Wait a few moments for background processes to complete. Start Thunderbird.

  • Enter Password
  • select checkbox 'Use Password Manager to remember this password'
  • click on 'OK'

  • right click on mail account in Folder Pane and select 'Subscribe'

a list will appear

  • select 'Sent' or 'Sent Items' or 'Sent Mail' depends upon what they call it.

  • Right click on mail account name in Folder Pane and select 'Settings'
  • select 'Copies & Folders'

Toad-Hall..THANK YOU for last 3 what to do ... very clear, understandable help messages. Have done everything you have recommended. So far so good.

I just wish we had found you ages ago. This was happening on my last computer. Took it to a shop and he tried but didn't sort it. He said it was probably our slow broadband...but it is not that slow. I got so fed up with it I assumed it was my computers fault. So went and bought a new computer. Imagine my distress at all these problems starting up again. The support I paid for with new computer refuse to get involved in e mail issues.

All the time you have spent helping this technophobic, ignoramus is so appreciated. If ever you need help to id a plant ...then I am your woman!!!!! Thank you ...fingers crossed. warmest wishes. Sheila.

I logged a similar problem about 3 hours ago but with more details. I tried all of the suggestions here with no effect. Finally, I reset everything, port 143 and password encripted, and it is now working again. As I put in my other post, this is a regular problem with tiscali and has been for me for more than 2 years. It usually returns without any action after an hour or 12. 2 hours ago in desperation I set up the same account on Microsoft mail and it self set and downloaded mail in less than 2 minutes but Thunderbird still wasn't working. I had exactly the same problem with Outlook 2000 which I was using until about 3 weeks ago. My only problem now is that, having deleted the mails from my Kindle and Mail, they are not there to download on Thunderbird. Is this progress? Back to POP for me.

Ronat42 re: My only problem now is that, having deleted the mails from my Kindle and Mail, they are not there to download on Thunderbird. If you were using imap mail accounts then emails are stored on server, so it does not matter whether you delete via webmail, Thunderbird or other email clients, other computers , phones etc, the email is deleted off the server and imap mail accounts only see remote view of server. If you use POP then make sure you select the option in Account Settings > Server Settings to 'Leave messages on server', else the server will auto delete off server when you download. This should then allow you to download to a second device or use server emails as a limited backup.

Thanks Toad-Hall, That is what I have always done, ever since I first used Outlook 2000. That has been my sole email system until the last Win 10 update has defeated even my sons' tricks to keep it running. The problem with the tiscali server seems to be causing several users problems. it may be that some don't even realise that there is a problem as it always comes back after anything up to 12 hours if left alone and it has been going on to a lesser extent for a year or 2 now. I know it affects Thunderbird and it used to knock out Outlook. It is always the same problem - password not recognised. The easiest response is to do nothing but twice in 25 hours is desperate. I have now set a new email address as ????@talktalk.net as these do not seem to be affected and monitoring the old one on Microsoft Mail as it doesn't seem to be affected along with TalkTalk emails. I suppose it is time I moved into the present day.
