Downloading message at bottom, number too high

At the bottom of the window is the line "Downloading 36414 of 35338 in In and Out". It continues to increment.

Note that the first number is HIGHER than the second. The Yahoo web email shows 35338 messages in the folder. This folder has had no changes in over a month.

Some background: I first installed Thunderbird recently. It required massive downloads from Yahoo mail, with over 70k messages in the "In and Out" folder. After that I moved about half the messages in that folder to other folders. All that was working.

Then a few days ago there were authentication problems with all email client apps. I had not started Thunderbird in several days. I started Thunderbird and it could not connect to the email server for reasons that will probably never be clear. ALL MY THUNDERBIRD FOLDERS THAT MATCHED THE ONES ON THE SERVER DISAPPEARED. That was also when I discovered my backups were missing the Thunderbird profile. When email authentication problems were fixed I had to start over. Thunderbird has been downloading all the messages from scratch; for this particular folder the numbers are confusing.

As I finish writing this message the download has continued and now says "Downloading 37163 of 35338 in In and Out".

Chosen solution

It finished, strange count or not. The count for the folder is unchanged, so I guess I can just hope that no damage was done.

When I check the Folder Properties, under General Information, "Number of messages: 35338".

The download continues; the counter now says it is downloading 39217 of 35338.

Ah well, maybe I spoke too soon. The "In and Out" folder has had no activity in over a month, and a few minutes ago Thunderbird told me it was completely up to date. In any case, "Downloading 251 of 445 in In and Out" is the current message.
