When I try and drag the FF icon into the folder I get a message "The operation can not be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items." This is on a Mac and I am downloading from the Mac icon

Which version of Mac OSX do you have?

Firefox 2.0.0.20 is the last ever release for Mac OSX 10.3.9 and earlier versions. Get it here: http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-2.0.0.20&os=osx&lang=en-US
