re :My BT email account was closed by them

I presume this occured because you stopped using them as your ISP (Internet Service Provider). As you no longer had an account with BT, therefore email address no longer existed.

No idea what you are talking about. Thunderbird does not register anything with anyone. It is just an email client program running on your computer which connects to the relevant servers for specific email addresses to access and download/send emails.

If 'blockbuster' charged you to register with them then that has nothing to do with Thunderbird......but it sounds very odd as it is well known that Blockbuster went in liquidation years ago. No idea what 'blockbuster' you are talking about.

You can get a free email address with gmail. If you want additional services; maybe to help run business eg: Google workspace, then you may be billed for those additional services, but that has nothing to do with Thunderbird.

If you paid 'Thunderbird' some monies as a donation then that would be very helpful as it does cost to maintain 'Thunderbird' email client. But there is only one place where the donations are made and that donation webpage is here:

You can also easily locate this webpage from within Thunderbird via 'Help' > 'Make a donation'

If you want to create a mail account in Thunderbird to be able to access gmail server and download emails.... In Thunderbird: Please check the settings for cookies - gmail needs this setting to allow imap access.

  • Select 'Menu app icon' > 'Options/Preferences'
  • In 'Options/Preferences' left Pane select 'Privacy & Security'
  • Select the checkbox 'Accept cookies from sites'

Now create the account:

  • Menu app icon > New > 'Existing mail account'
  • Enter name
  • Enter your gmail email address
  • Enter the password - this is the same password you would use to access your gmail webmail.
  • Select the checkbox to remember password
  • Click on 'Continue'

Thunderbird will automatically look up the configuration settings for an imap gmail account.

  • Click on 'Done' to create the account.

Please note: you will get prompted by gmail to enter password as gmail is checking you really are you and this is required to allow Thunderbird access.
