When I try to receive messages I get this notice, "Sending of password for user @att.net did not succeed. Mail server inbound.att.net responded: Server error - Please try again later." I cannot SEND messages either. I have checked the password with both the ATT.net server, and on the settings on Thunderbird. Both are the same. I don't know know what I've done wrong this time . Thanks very much.

Are you using a secure mail key in place of the account password? Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords, delete the old passwords, restart TB, enter the secure key when prompted for a password.

I spent hours upon hours yesterday with a rep from AT&T. Their website is obviously screwed up so she had her work cut out for her. While I appreciate your efforts, to my knowledge, I am not using a secure mail key. She had me change my password a couple of times, and jump through numerous other hoops and nothing has helped. This all started because I wanted to add an additional email address to AT&T that I could use through Thunderbird. My main email for personal correspondence is through Gmail. I've had enough of Google, the big, megalomaniac throwing their weight around like they own the world and I want to rid myself of them forever. That is why I was trying to get another ATT/Thunderbird account set up, but in the mayhem of ATT being such a mess, now none of my Thunderbird emails are working. Thanks for trying.

You must use a secure mail key with ATT. Please follow the link provided by sfhowes and obtain one and insert it instead of your old password.

I don't understand about "Must use a secure key with AT&T". All AT&T says is that SOME websites might require a secure key. Anyway, I've tried a "secure key" with TB and same problem. I can't get get mail, and I can't send mail.

If you can log into your account on the Yahoo website, you might be able to set it up in TB with OAuth2 authentication:

I don't have an AT&T account to test, but that should work with either a secure key or the regular password, although I would first try it with the latter.

Ok, you must you a secure key to access mail in Thunderbird using the yahoo mail service ATT are contracted for. It is a troubled thing that neither ATT or Yahoo appear to understand or care about. It ticks the box "free mail account" so they can sell the product. No one says it has to be easy or really work outside of their own web page.
