How can I make Firefox save my proxy settings and stop defaulting to the wrong set?

Every time I open Firefox it gives me a message saying my proxy settings are not allowing sites to load. I can change my settings in the options section and Firefox will work for that session, but Firefox defaults to the settings that caused the problems in the first place. No matter how many times, or ways, I change the settings, it always defaults and I have to manually change the settings each time I start up Firefox.
