Search Bar Visible Only in Customize
I'm using FF 56.0.1 (not beta) x64. Not sure if I'm having precisely the same problem as others. My search box *is* visible in the menu bar when I do menu bar > right-click > Customize. But it disappears as soon as I leave Customize.
This is a new installation. I was using the same version of FF a few hours ago on this same machine in a previous Win10 installation. Brought everything over via sync.
I have tried Customize > reset default.
Thanks.

Edit: See Cor-el's reply below. You can disable the unified search thing in about:studies, much neater than what I did.

If you are comfortable with looking a bit under the hood, this fixed it for me:
- Open a new tab and go to -> about:config
- Read the warning and proceed
- In the about:config search bar, enter "search" to filter down the list
- Find the value "browser.search.widget.inNavBar" and set it to "true" (you can double click the value and see the search bar appear and disappear as you change the value)
Hope this helps.

You may have received the TAARexperiment extension as part of a Mozilla Shield study.
You can disable this study on the about:studies page or remove the extension to op-out of this experiment.

Folks -- thanks for your replies. For some reason, the problem disappeared. At this point, two months later, I have no idea why.
Firefox 57+ can hide the search bar and use the location/address bar for visiting websites and for searching.
See the Search tab in Options/Preferences.
- Options/Preferences -> Search -> Search Bar
- (x) Use the address bar for search and navigation
- (-) Add search bar in toolbar
