when I reply to a message, how to prevent the names details in the addressbook to be changed automatically to what the writer provided

In Thunderbird 31.6.0 running on Win7-64, when I reply to a message, the names details in the addressbook are changed automatically to what the writer provided, even if the contact was already in my Address book.

Is there a way to prevent this from happening and preserving MY contact details? Is there a way to configure globally not to make this name change?.

I highly doubt that this process is changing any details in your personal address book. I suspect what your are referring to is names and addresses being suggested when typing in an address field. Those suggestions come from ALL address books including the collected book. The collected book keeps all SENT addresses. You can go in and clean that up periodically or turn that function off in Options.

Thank you for your reply, However, it does happen !!! When I reply to a message including name information in the header provided by the sender, the corresponding fields in the contact's entry in the addressbook are altered, replacing the existing by those supplied by the sender. This happens when in my address book the names are in English and the senders' are in Hebrew. I did not check it with senders with English in their names.

hold shift while starting thunderbird to use safe mode.

Does it occur with all add-ons disabled. (Yes it messes up Hebrew as the bidi add-on is not activated.)

Thank you Matt, In Safe Mode and without the BiDi support, it does not happen. But Hebrew is a must. Is there a way to tweak the configs to prevent this phenomena?

Is there any kind of address book in Windows that Thunderbird can read but not write? For Mac OS, there is the Mac OS Address Book that is like that. That would be the ideal solution.

Thank you finitarry, Point is I do work a lot with this address book, (actually several of them, with total of around 10K addresses) and I do want to be able to write to it and edit it , I just want it to "behave"..:)

Do you have any other add-ons other the BIDI. Really this does not sound like a part of the program BIDI would be overlaying. It could be, in which case I will have to point you to the add-on authors support email address to see if he can shed any light.

There are some thing you could try, but it is only guess work until the actual reason your having the problem can be determined and may be a total waste of time.

Can you confirm that this did not happen with previous version? 31.5

Mat, This is a new installation. (took over OE6 while moving to win 7). The only addons used are bidi ui and hebrew dictionary. I am in contact with the bidi addon developer and according to him there is no connection . I tried some tweaks with the configs that seem to solve the problem. will post it after confirmation.
