I assumed that Thunderbird Address Book was able to merge 2 mailing lists (from 2 'address books') and NOT copy the duplicate addresses. But I was wrong. Why does TB think that I want to have a mailing list with 2 or 3 copies of the same email address?

OK. Most of the duplicates disappeared like this: I copied all addresses from the new imported Address Book into a new mailing list in the Personal Address Book. Then I created a new mailing list in the Personal Address Book and copied 8 other mailing lists from the same Address Book into it. That removed almost all duplicates, but not those that had different 'Display Name's.
