What happened to Arial Black (and others)?

Windows 7, 64

Firefox 5.0 will not display Arial Black

Chrome will display Arial Black

I created some web pages for design work that compare font styles and sizes based on what fonts are on the computer. When I open the site in Firefox I no longer see Arial Black as I had recently when I was using Windows Vista 64 and Firefox 4.x.

Windows 7 has a different font organization than Vista and it seems to be part of the issue. Groups of fonts, such as Arial, are represented in the fonts folder with multiple pages and seem to have the problem. In my website I use CSS to set which fonts to display, "Arial Black" in this example (with quotes). That worked just fine with my previous setup and it works with my current setup using Chrome. It just doesn't work with the Windows 7 and Firefox 5.0 combination.

I would say that there is some relationship issue between Windows 7 and Firefox 5.0.

Any thoughts or solutions?

Thanks,

Mark

I've seen issues with the Arial fonts on Windows 7 reported before, so there may indeed be a problem with the way Firefox detects fonts on Windows 7.

Very interesting link, thanks. Also interesting that if I view this website on Chrome I see every one of the fonts that I have if it is on the list. However, on Firefox I have the same problem of not seeing any of the fonts that are groups within the Windows 7 Font folder. These do not show up: Arial, Copperplate, Eras, Footlight MT Light, Kozuka Gothic, etc. It is interesting that most of these fonts are part of a group of fonts and they are arranged that way in the Windows 7 Fonts folder. All except Footlight MT Light. So now another mystery.

If anyone is running the Win 7 / Firefox 5.0 combination try using the link above in both Firefox and Chrome and perhaps we will be able to corroborate a repeatable problem.

Thought I would post some screen shots of my website from Chrome and Firefox.

I made some changes to the CSS and it seems to have worked, generally. IE and Chrome still work, Safari does not.

I found it interesting that the names of the fonts are not clear. For example: "Footlight MT Light" is not this name, nor "Footlight MT", nor "FootlightMT", nor FTLTLT (from properties). I still don't know what it is.

I guess in the near future I will be using the CSS3 @font-face functionality.

Under windows 7, if you're starting the thunderbird or firefox with compatibility of windows xp service pack 3, then arial narrow will be available again. Works for me great!
