This usually happens whenever I right click for a new tab or click a link. The unwanted tab always has the URL http://xn--3!?1 -fua0do447bmv6g/#%C5%93%C3%8E%06%E2%80%99Ucr%C2%B7%C3%80 and I am constantly having to close these tabs.

Chosen Solution

Thanks mha007. The suggestion there about replacing pipes with %7C did not work, but the fact that the discussion alerted me to the fact that the problem was with having pipes because of having multiple tabs for the home page finally allowed me to solve the problem by limiting myself to 1 homepage tab for now. Not an ideal solution as I would like multiple tabs opening at start up, however better than the constant problem that I was having.

Always had multiple tabs, but never had this problem until a few days ago. I can only assume that it started with the most recent Firefox update.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Thanks cor-el. I have done 1 good malware scan, but may now try others. It turns out that limiting myself to 1 home page tab was not a solution at all. I am still having that problem as well as another that I had not mentioned yet whereby Firfox totally freezes up, even with just the one home page tab. I am now forced to use ie as my browser for now, until I solve this.

I might also like to try completely uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling, if I can figure out how to save my bookmarks. Any suggestions on how I do this? Anyone?

We have seen such punicode links before in the past and there was always malware involved in those cases. So you need to check that out.
