Running two versions of Firefox

I was told that if I put Firefox 4 in a separate directory that I could run 4 separate from 3. I did this, however under XP and my Documents and settings, I see that Mozilla only has one directory which is where the containing folder is located. My assumption is that both 3 and 4 are using this. The issue is that 4 will not give me the message of saving multiple tab or not like 3 will. I'm wondering if having only one containing folder is the issue when running two version on the same machine. Why doesn't 4 create it's own profile when loaded separately? Seems that this creates issues and doesn't give the user a true test of the software because 3 and 4 are still sharing this folder and possibly interfering with each other. Is there a work around to this?

In order to use both versions, you need to create a new profile for Firefox 4 (Firefox stores user data in the profile). Using the same profile with different versions can cause problems. Once you create a new profile you can copy certain data such as bookmarks and passwords between them. You can also use Firefox Sync to keep the profile synchronized. Finally, you will need to set up shortcuts to launch the correct profile for each version.
