The keyboard shortcut to go to the location bar is either Control+L or Alt+D. F6 is used to move to the next frame in web pages using frames.
F6 still works for me in Firefox 4 to shift focus between the browser window and the location bar and the sidebar (if open). If a plugin on a page has focus then keyboard shortcuts won't work and you will have to use the mouse to set focus outside that plugin.
I use russian and english dvorak keyboard layouts. Now in order to move the keyboard focus into the address bar I have to press Control+L or Alt+D when in russian mode and Ctrl+P or Alt+H when in dvorak mode. It's inconvenient. I don't remember when (if any) I used the "move to next frame" functionality. but focus the address bar - very often.
I prefer to have the F6 as the shortcut for traditional jumping to the address bar.
ya I use the eng version for ff4 and us keyboard layout for win7. I tried these shortcuts and only Alt+D is the case. I use yahoo mail and alt+d will move my mail to the deleted mail folder, so I think it's not very convenient.
I found a fix!!
Explanation: The F6 shortcut does not work with the new 'tabs on top' feature of FF4. Simply switching back to the normal layout (tabs on bottom) fixes the issue.
I have provided two fixes (short and longer versions) that can be done in three easy steps!
Fix: (Method 1, short way) See image 1
- Bring down the FireFox menu (new and fancy lookin' orange thing on top)
- Go to 'Options'
- Uncheck the 'Tabs on top' options
Fix: (Method 2, long way) See image 2
Note; I am assuming that you all have Menu Bar hidden. If not, skip to step 2.
- Press the 'Alt' key
- Go to 'View>Toolbars'
- Uncheck 'Tabs on top'
And voila! The [F6] shortcut should now work!!

Thank you Smilie. I had this problem after I upgraded to 4.0. I am handicapped and I always use the F6 key for the address bar since FireFox came out. Lol. That was a weird issue, and I hope it'll be fixed by an update. Thanks again.

You can also press F6 and use the Tab key to set focus to the location bar if you want to keep the tabs on top.
cmd+L does it on a mac
ya
but alt+d & uncheck the 'tabs on top' are still not convenient for me:-)
My laptop has a wide screen, so it's better to put the tabs on top to save a bit space for display more, hehe~
I will continue to use alt+d (these two key is nearby) until the better solution comes forth
Smilie, Awesome!
Didnt even realize tabs moved to the top, sat here for 10 min turning it on and off to see the difference, yeah alt+D and ctrl+L all work fine in ff4, but ive been usin F6 for years, was so disappointed when ff4 changed it, now its all good again... and besides why would i use F6 to jump between tab and screen? i just use ctrl+tab or ctrl+shift+tab to change tab and focus on previous location on screen
Modified
