The Status Bar is no longer present in Firefox 4.0 b7 and replaced by the Add-ons Bar that extensions can use.

Status-4-Evar: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/235283/

Open the View > Toolbars > Customize window after you have installed the Status-4-Evar extension and drag the items up on the Add-ons Bar (View > Toolbars > Add-on Bar)

ok so with out a status bar how the heck do I resize the browser window in OS X? if the only way is 3rd party add on rubish it's time to kick fire fox to the curb. Fire fox UI now looks just a broken and missing stuff as ie 9 beta, a tiny little 16 x 16 icon is not evident enough that something is happening... just makes things look broken!

If you had an icon on the old Status bar, it should appear in the new Add-on bar. If it doesn't you have to wait for the developer to update that addon.

thanks that worked and btw i like using firefox beta it keeps me on my toes.

Hi ff4beta users, looks like this is stop for status-bar transition as UI minimization & simplification is happening.

First and most important about the status bar is security / safety because it shows the URL on a hovered link. How else would you know where a link takes you? I was kinda surprised to read how many people just turn it off. But it seems like most people turn current status-bar off due to screen space limitations. Anyone looking for more screen space (especially vertically) with their Browser, hit the F11 key and go Full-screen (hit f11 to return or can be invoke from view menu). This works in Firefox (all versions) and any other decent browser. So, for security and browsing safety, I would leave the status-bar on and go full-screen if screensize an issue.

In FF4, displaying the hovered URL in the location (address) bar is ok, I just hope I can tweak color / style a bit as the light-grey looked a little soft. didn't see anything in about:config, but if anyone knows how to change hover link color / background. darker text and soft background color would be good

The status-4-evar is much needed, thanks! Mozilla developers and others should realize that features (like the status-bar) should not just disappear in new releases. Users get dependent on features and before features disappear, a user toggle should be used to allow use of this feature as it is being phased out in future release.

a small thing I found when setting up....is that hover links won't display for links on the 'add-on' page itself. But those aren't real http: links, they are add-on commands so they won't show up. But on normal tab, works super!! maybe add an '*links on add-on pages not shown in status-4-evar' in your dialog box or faq.

"In FF4, displaying the hovered URL in the location (address) bar is ok, I just hope I can tweak color / style a bit as the light-grey looked a little soft"

That is going to be changed before the release of 4.0, from what I have read. I don't recall the exact change that is being made, but it is to make the hovered URL more visible in the Location bar. Plus, I wouldn't doubt if someone has come up with a UserStyle for changing that by now.
http://userstyles.org/

"...is that hover links won't display for links on the 'add-on' page itself," I see the URL being displayed in both the Location bar and the S-4-E statusbar for the Add to Firefox buttons at AMO. The only "links" you might not see the URL is for JavaScript triggered hyperlinks.

Add code to userChrome.css below the @namespace line. You can experiment with the code to see what works best for you.

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

.urlbar-over-link-host-label,
.urlbar-over-link-path-label{
color:#000 !important;
font-weight:bold;
}

That might be an after effect of the Full-HD 1080p trend in monitors these days. The usual resolution for 24" LCD monitors was 1920x1200 for a while, but now have been downgraded to 1080. You can fit two double-sized Windows 7 task bars in 120 pixels so removing the status bar frees some vertical real estate.

I miss the status bar because I use it for resizing the window. It is much easier to hit the lower right corner resize area than the window borders. I have set the borders (called border padding) to 1 to get more use of my monitor.

cor-el,

awesome - thanks for the info on chrome.css. I am running ff4.0b7 on linux 64bit 10.04. I tweaked your styling a bit as it was a bit strong all bold like that. here is what I used in case someone needs another example.

.urlbar-over-link-host-label {

       color:#ff0000 !important;
       font-weight:bold;
       background:#fdffb7;

} .urlbar-over-link-path-label {

       color:#666 !important;
       background:#fdffb7;

}

it has soft-yellow background with a bold red domain (host) and dark gray on link path. How did you find the css style class names to adjust?

@Dark Ultra, maybe a windows/mac thing with losing re-size ability without status bar. on linux, can re-size fine with or without add-on 'status-4-evar'. you seem fairly savvy, but maybe auto-hide the taskbar and you can gain a little more space for apps. With alt-tab switching (and even windows-key-Tab switching) or just hit the windows key (start menu comes up), but hidden task bar will too! or do F11 and auto-hide. you could get a monitor that rotates to portrait, but you lose the width in that mode obviously. I have one, never ever rotated it - LOL ;-) with auto-hide and f11 you can get 1080px vertical and no distractions as shown in attachments (vista ultimate 64bit desktop with 1920x1080 main monitor).

I like double high task bar up to Windows Vista, but since Win7 has icons, single-high bar has not gotten over-crowed.

PS: support@mozilla...had issues uploading files, spinner stuck loading, but preview reply shows images fine....just to let you know...make this reply box bigger too!

I'd like an in-app option so I don't have to use an addon. I think that would make it use less resources to redraw the addon, than using Windows' integrated status bar system? Firefox 4 beta 10 is tearing a lot when it is resized.

the-edmeister, there are about:config configuration options (that can be quite useful, as add-ons will sometimes actually work when a newer version of Firefox, or an update comes out), which can disable compatibility checking, or better yet some add-ons that are worth mentioning, which can do the same - only safer:

  1. Add-on Compatibility Reporter (by Mozilla), which is automatic or
  2. Nightly Tester Tools / homepage / support.

Tools menu, Add-ons will bring up the manager where you can Search all add-ons, in order to install them internally, instead of going to the links above (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+A)

win ff 4.x #fxhelp =)

Corliya,

I have been using Nightly Tester Tools since it first came out in the fall of 2006. Excellent extension that has helped me to continue using a few 2.0 extensions all the way up thru the Firefox 3.5 versions when both finally broke and I had use use alternative extensions. The feature in NTT that I still use even in 4.0, is the ability to change the Browser Title which shows my choice of text in the Windows Taskbar so I can identify which version of Firefox I have running in a particular window. Beyond that one feature I use the Compatibility Reporter for other features that I used to use NTT for.

Sorry, I don't see which of the two postings I made in this thread 3 months ago caused you to post in this thread, which was started because the "owner" couldn't activate the Statusbar which was removed in beta 7. The "mouse hover" (the most discussed change in this thread for 4.0b7) for URL's was changed twice since this thread was started, so much of much that was discussed is different now in the 4.0RC than it was in 4.0b7.

Yes, both the Compatibility Reporter will allow a user to try an older extension to see if it works, but it won't fix the Statusbar icon & make it into a Toolbar icon. The older Statusbar icons will display in the new Addon bar, but the user has no way to move those old icons. They are stuck where the extension places them, all bunched together with the other old Statusbar icons. I have fixed two older extensions (for my own use) that the developer updated for Firefox 4.0, but didn't bother to fix the Statusbar icon and make it into a true Toolbar icon that can be placed exactly where the user wants it located.

Something I'm more concerned about due to the absence of the status bar..

Previously I did a 3-point check on any 'secure' website 1) Check for the HTTPS 2) Check for the padlock at the bottom right of the webpage 3) Check the certificate. before I signed into any secure website.

How do you do that now the status bar has gone? Thanks

Hit "Ctrl+/" to view add-ons bar to the bottom of the window. Most of the conventional status bar stuff can still be found there. Hope this helps :)

The name for Status-4-Evar add-on is absolutely perfect. EVAR is a medical term meaning endovascular aneurysm repair. Firefox 4 suffered a life threatening aneurysm when the developers left out the status bar, which is very important and something many users rely on for security and page status.

An EVAR is a less invasive procedure than open surgery and can quickly save the patient's life as opposed to surgery (Mozilla adding back the status bar natively.) However, there is a tradeoff because a further procedure is more often needed after EVAR than after open surgery.

So this seems to be a temporary fix.

(removed reply) Ctrl+/ was already posted, and my reply didn't appear below the relevant post anyway.

The new add on bar cannot equalise old status bar especially when I had to use the secured login sites. I miss the security lock sign that comes in status bar. Online bank users like me are worried about phishing of our hard earned money. Firefox team do something to get back the security lock sign back in status bar or even address bar will do.

@hornbeam1984

Security information about a web page is shown by the Site Identity Button.
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Site+Identity+Button
The old padlock could give users a false sense that a site is secure by not supplying all of the information about a site and only showed that there is a secure connection that didn't guarantee that you are connected to the right server. The Site Identity Button was introduced in Firefox 3.0 to show more complete "identity" information for HTTPS web pages.

You can add a padlock to the location bar with the Padlock add-on- https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/padlock-icon
