Under Use my custom settings on each device, you have the option of which types of data you want sync'd with your other devices.

   * Bookmarks
   * Passwords
   * Preferences
   * History
   * Tabs 

At this time Sync can't handle specific pieces or groups of data per device, it's all or nothing. When you "sync" a category of data with the Sync server, all that data gets uploaded - no way to specify which bits of data gets uploaded. At the Sync server the data gets merged with the data from the other devices, so every device has the same data.

IOW, if you sync your bookmarks, all of them will be synchronized on and with the devices that option is selected on. No way to filter out "home" bookmarks from "work" bookmarks. The only way around that is to have separate Sync accounts and separate Firefox user Profiles on the PC's for "work" and "home" sets of data; and that probably won't work on the iPhone (don't know for sure, don't own an iPhone).

The ability to only synchronize some folders was very useful on Xmarks. Until Firefox has it, it will only be a partial replacement. Sync on a folder-by-folder basis would be sufficient.

Sync isn't meant to replace Xmarks, it's a separate service that has been under development for a couple of years now.

Sync is surely not just to replace Xmarks. But for a sync type service, it is reasonable to expect the ability to choose which folder to sync.

For example, with dropbox you don't(or very unlikely) sync the entire disk. Because no enough space or simply don't want to copy all the crap cross every single machine.

And bookmarks are the same deal with files. When you at work or using a shared computer, you might only need part of your collection copied. I love the way Xmarks handle bookmarks for different profiles. I hope they don't shut off.

Passwords are a serious security issue and because they are hidden they are not getting enough attention. You might save some passwords on a secure home or work system that should never be saved on a phone or laptop. I do not always think this sort of thing through. At minimum users should be reminded and see what is being synchronized.

With sync on after saving a sensitive password on the computer locked away in an office, anyone with brief access to a synchronized phone could access important email, work, investment, or bank accounts, or crib the information from the phone and log in later.

The browser should not be promulgating passwords to your iphone, laptop or ipad with out prompting you just because at some point you turned on password sync. When asking if you want to save a password the dialog should clearly state that password sync is turned on or off.

Password viewing might be turned off or disabled if synchronization is enabled on mobile devices.. Even if it's a setting that can be restored in about:config this may be enough to deter many from trying to steal passwords by viewing.

When turning password sync on a dialog should show all the accounts that are going to be synchronized and ask if you want to continue now or turn password sync off until you have time to consider and manage sensitive passwords.

This is a very serious security concern. Password sync could be very useful but this feature needs to be given some tender consideration and care before it's widely used.

It would be very helpful if I could have two profiles (one for home and one for work) to be able to sync them both to the same account and have a choice to switch between profiles easily via the "File" menu.
