Currently using FF 38.0.5 in Windows 7. I've posted about a related issue in the past, but I basically gave up on it. It has now become more prevalent, so I'm going to take another stab at this. When browsing sites in HTTPS, I can't leave a page and come back to it without it autorefreshing. As an example: Reddit has updated their site to force HTTPS for all users. If I collapse a number of comments and then click on a link, when I return, all of those comments will have expanded again. If I then go back to the front page, everything has updated. Basically, Firefox is not saving the page's state when I go Forward or Back. This occurs with ALL sites that use HTTPS. It's extremely annoying and it has me very tempted to switch to another browser. I've been told that others have run into this issue, but I can't seem to find anything about it and I haven't found any solutions.

I have cleared my cache and cookies and I have also tried forgetting afflicted sites and running Firefox in Safe Mode. Nothing I do makes a difference. I tried installing an add-on called RefreshBlocker, but it only works sometimes.

Another issue while browsing sites with HTTPS is that I can't use the Back/Forward buttons to go through multiple pages. If I press Back three times, it won't go back three pages; it will only go back to the previous page and I have to wait for that to start loading before I can go back another page. I can use the dropmenu to select a specific page, but I like using my keyboard for navigation because it's usually quicker.

Both of these HTTPS issues have existed since FF24, perhaps even longer. Is there anything I can do? More and more sites are enforcing HTTPS and my browsing time is increasing unnecessarily.

Chosen solution

This problem was posted yesterday, although at the time I didn't realize HTTPS was the problem because I tested using HTTP (didn't log in): Going back to the previous page refreshes the whole page.

The Reddit user in that thread found a workaround, which is to use an add-on to block the instructions Reddit sends not to cache pages. You can see that in this post: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1069550#answer-747393

You can check the browser.cache.disk_cache_ssl pref on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Thank you, jscher2000! Pages still refresh here and there, but this has improved things significantly. I can't wait to apply this to a couple of the forums that I have been avoiding because of these issues. I'm not sure if it was intended, but this also enables me to go back/forward normally again.

cor-el, Out of curiosity, what should my preference be for that setting? It was set to true, so I set it to false and it seemed to improve my condition, but only somewhat. Should I keep it set to false? Thanks!
