Where has the "Show more bookmarks" arrow on the end of the Bookmarks Toolbar gone?
I need this "Show more bookmarks" arrow every day and do not want to "update" my Firefox 28.0 to something that removes the function. (It's a previous issue that has been archived but without an answer there.)

Do you mean "Show All Bookmarks" and not "Show More Bookmarks" ? If so, FF29 has put it all the way at the bottom of your bookmarks drop-down (bad UI decision, IMO). You will need to scroll all the way down to see it.
You can edit chrome.css file to get it to the top. See other posts like : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/997335
I assume that you mean the overflow chevron that shows if there are more bookmarks than fit on the Bookmarks Toolbar
You may be using a theme that is not compatible.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.
- 3-bar Firefox menu button > Options/Preferences
- View > Toolbars (press F10 to display the hidden Menu bar)
- Right-click empty toolbar area
Use Toolbar Layout (Customize) to open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.
- check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
- if "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette into the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
You can also try to click the "Restore Defaults" button in the Customize window (3-bar Firefox menu button > Customize) to restore the default toolbar setup.
