I have an issue trying to configure a secondary email account, for a non-profit I do some work for. It was ok in the past, though I recall was tricky to set up on TB a couple of years ago. But now it has ceased to function after I migrated TB profile (successfully apart from this issue) no matter what I try. I’d be grateful for any suggestions. As is the case with many non-profits, there’s little tech support, but others can use the email account ok. I think it may be a TB issue as I have been able to set up the account ok with MS new Windows Outlook app (lame, but better than Mail…low bar). I’d rather have this account on my TB client along with the others I use. And the issue is replicated on two of my PCs. TB account set up reports “can’t detect settings from host server”. I found a support thread link text, which says “The failure to detect settings is rather common where hosted domains are concerned. Mostly because everything is done to a price and most of the things around encryption are done in a halfhearted manner. As is the server setups for mail. However by faithfully copying the settings from the provider as to domains server name and ports it should work.” So I did manual configuration – copied the settings from the successful Outlook set up, but no dice – all I get is server time out message. Settings are: IMAP server: mail.XXXX.org.uk Port 993 Security SSL/TLS [earlier working settings were STARTTLS port 143] SMTP server: mail.XXXX.org.uk Port 465 Security SSL/TLS [[earlier working settings were STARTTLS port 587] And using Normal Password for both; I tried Autodetect too but no good. I’ve see a suggestion that turning off the firewall (Norton) might work, but I’m reluctant to do that and doesn’t seem to make sense that would cause the issue. I found another suggestion that apparently works for some people - leaving password blank on setup. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1399690. I hope someone can help, I've changed all the settings in Thunderbird for my whole family's emails (hotmail.co.uk, hotmail.com, live.co.uk) from Normal Password to OAuth2. All incoming and outgoing servers are exactly the same as Microsoft advised. None of my accounts work, neither for sending or receiving.

I removed one account and tried to re-add it (that was the advice given if the first method didn't work) but when it tries to check the password, it takes forever. I've tried to manually configure it but it wouldn't download any folders or emails. I removed it and tried to re-add it but have been unable to do even that.

My default account hasn't been able to send more than 25% of emails for a few weeks. I'm up to date with all updates and I've restarted Thunderbird and my laptop countless times.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

From Sept-16-2024 Microsoft will deprecate Normal Password and require OAuth2 authentication on its email accounts accessed from Thunderbird and other clients.

I'm trying to convert my hotmail accounts on Thunderbird to OAuth2 authentication.

Server Settings Authentication can be set to OAuth2 because OAuth2 is an option in that menu.

But SMTP Server Authentication cannot be set to OAuth2 because OAuth2 is not an option in that menu.

Both Connection Security methods ( Inbound and SMTP ), are set to STARTTLS.

All the gmail entries & passwords deleted, remaining email passwords replaced, as of this morning.

I replaced them, and then so did they. I just yesterday deleted my online life... I'm sure just a coincidence.

I have received an email from Microsoft informing me of changes to its authentification procedure. As from Sept, to continue using Thunderbird to access my outlook/hotmail accounts, I have to change the authentification method to Oauth2. The reasons and changes required are detailed here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/microsoft-oauth-authentication-and-thunderbird-202 I have 2 problems. 1. imap-mail.outlook.com - I can change my authentification method to Oauth2. However, when I then try to access my mail via TB, I get an error stating that the server imap-mail.outlook.com does not support the authentification method! (see image) 2. Outgoing Server SMTP There is no Oauth2 option available to choose!

Can anyone help? I am using the most up to date version of Thunderbird 115.12.2 (64-bit).

How can I stop Google constantly interfering with my usage of other programs. It wants me to sign -in with my gmail a/c. Not interested. Only just happened. Have been using Thunderbird (and Firefox) without any problems for many years. I feel Google is trying stand-over tactics.

I use Thunderbird 115.12.2 (64-bit) with Hotmail, using a local account on Windows 10. If I try to alter my existing Thunderbird Account Settings for my Hotmail account, the authentication method for Outgoing Server (SMTP) is shown as Normal Password but there is no option to change it to OAuth2. If I delete and recreate my Hotmail account in Thunderbird, I get an error message from Microsoft saying that I cannot log in because my browser is not set to allow cookies -- even though I believe I have set both Thunderbird and Firefox (my default browser) to allow cookies.

I have just migrated Thunderbird to my new CUBI desktop running Windows 11. I get security errors when I launch Thunderbird. My email provider The Messaging Company advised me to change server settings, which are now shown in the Troubleshooting Information page as account1 (pop3) pop.themessagingco.com.au:995 SSL/TLS Normal password smtp.themessagingco.com.au:587 STARTTLS Normal password true.

On launching Thunderbird I get the message Secure connection failed live.mozillamessaging.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate has expired. Error code: <a id="errorCode" title="SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_ISSUER_CERTIFICATE">SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_ISSUER_CERTIFICATE</a>

   This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.
   If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error may be temporary, and you can try again later.

Or you can add an exception…

AND when I attempt to send an email I get warning that the SMTP server does not have a valid certificate. If I ask, in either case, to "Get Certificate" the response is that the site attempts to identify itself with invalid information.

I have "tried again later" over two weeks, and nothing has changed.

The Messaging Company is a fairly large email provider: it seems strange that its security is incomplete. However, I am not happy to just set an exception and over-ride these errors without doing all I can to check that there is not something screwy going on. I really value using Thunderbird, and The Messaging Company's advice that I should just use webmail is not at all satisfactory: I keep everything on my computer or backed up to a portable drive here.

Please: is there anything I can do or should know to fix this problem?

When I first installed thunderbird a couple of months ago I set it up for my vigin media and my google email addresses and it all worked fine. Then about a month ago it refused to send e-mails from my virgin media email address ( I can receive but not send). Virgin media said it was a password issue I had to use a third party e-mail address to log into my account and change the password. It has taken VM 3-4 weeks to create the new password for me.

However Thuderbirds does to recognies the new password. I removed the VM email address for Thunderbird and tried to reinstall it but I can't as it says the pass word is wrong. The new password works in outlook and in the google e-mail browser on my phone and tablet but not in thunderbird, so nothing wrong with the password.

I have read a blog from someone with a similar issue (except he could not receive emails from his VM address). He was recommended to create a new profile. I have done that and it still does not work.

 Any ideas anyone?

Having followed the instructions at https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/office/modern-authentication-methods-now-needed-to-continue-syncing-outlook-email-in-non-microsoft-email-apps-c5d65390-9676-4763-b41f-d7986499a90d to update the security settings on my outlook/hotmail email accounts Thunderbird no longer reliably saves/enters the passwords. The password is saved in settings as that is where I copy it from to enter manually but why is Thunderbird not doing the entry as previously. It is not every log in and not always the same account, but regularly one or the other will come up with "enter your credentials" Also occasionally the credentials screen will flash on screen and then disappear, not necessarily for the account I am using at the time but one of the others. Issue began Monday 7/1 where Thunderbird would not receive new email from AOL. At times it would tell me to enter the password. But the p/w I entered was not correct so that made situation worse. Found "Saved Passwords" in Help->Settings where I was able to retrieve the -correct- p/w for one of the email addresses being actively used in Thunderbird and problem solved. When I went to find the correct p/w for the other email address, the account in "Saved Logins" was not there?? Was odd that the list did display email accounts I haven't used in years, but not the 2nd one that I use daily! I tried changing the p/w at AOL Mail, but that didn't work for either of my two accounts. Bottom line, why isn't lf82me@verizon.net showing up in the "Saved Passwords" in Settings?

Microsoft is changing the authentication method for outlook mail to OAuth2. I follow the guide here,

And I get to this screen - but my version of the program does not have OAuth2 as an option (see attached image).

Microsoft tell me that I must use OAuth2 for my accounts, else I'll be locked out.

Server is imap-mail.outlook.com. If I select OAuth2, then I can't receive emails unless I reset back to Normal Password.

I'm also supposed to set my SMTP server (smtp-mail.outlook.com) to OAuth2, but this isn't an option on the drop down list.

Help, please!

Tell me how I can continue to use thunderbird with the above account and also Denis.Clarke.hotmail.com after September 18. I have 4 individual historic E mail accounts and thunderbird joins them together. What do you need to do? To deal with threat below.

When I click on a link from thunderbird mail to a specific website, it takes me to a log in page in the specified website where the email is automatically filled in. In firefox browser, I have cleared history for all time, including "form and search history", cookies, cache, browsing and download history, active log ins, site settings, and offline website data. I have deleted my log in for the specific website (the id and password for the site in settings, password section. In Thunderbird, I also deleted, in the Privacy and Security section, all "saved passwords" When I open up the page of the specific website in question, through Thunderbird, I continue to see on the log in page, that an old email I no longer use is entered automatically. When I type in firefox browser the same specified website, the old email address does not show up. That makes me think that the log in information is stored somewhere in Thunderbird, not firefox. What is the solution to remove this information whereever it has been stored?

Hi Cannot send emails via Thunderbird. Sending an email via grahamg.d@ntlworld.com failed (as do my others addresses - not tested this time) with message "Mail server responded - Authentication Code Require (VM401). can you help please? Have been having email problems with Virgin Media for some time now and it has got worse I can receive emails

Microsoft sent email last night announcing the end of "Normal Password" for Hotmail, and warning that Hotmail would REQUIRE "modern authrentication" beginning 9/16. I have personal desktop subscription to Microsoft 365. I have set Microsoft account to 2FA and checked in Tbird that cookies are enabled.

I have spent hours and days trying & failing. With server imap-mail.outlook.com using OAUTH2, Thunderbird won't sync and shows message saying that server doesn't support the authentication protocol please enter another one. With 2FA still turned on and using Normal Password setting and entering an App Password from Microsoft, the Imap connection is fine about 85% of the time, needing re-entry of the App password about once a day or so (usually requires several tries until App Password gets accepted.)

The 0AUTH2 fails with Norton Smart Firewall turned Off or Turned On-makes no difference.

(Sending email with Outlook and 0AUTH2 DOES work okay.)

I've also tried Imap connection with a different server: Outlook.office365.com, using 0AUTH2.

In this case, Tbird shows me a Timeout error and never makes an Imap connection to the server.  

I've been limping along with the app password, and "normal password" authentication, but now Microsoft announces they will stop accepting connections that are not 0Auth2 ("modern authentication") from Tbird or any other software after 9/16. The clock is ticking. I've tried every remedy I've seen online from Tbird or from Microsoft. Nothing has yet allowed a QAUTH connection for Tbird to a hotmail IMAP server. Please help! !

Is there a step by step tutorial on how to do this?
