Non-english letters like č and ć are displayed as ? in Correspondents in the Thunderbird mail list and in From in the individual mails. Not known to the font Thunderbird uses? Can I change that font?

I have added a new email address to Thunderbird and would like it at the top of the folder pane above other addresses. is this possible?

In new versions the mail display is always automatically shown in Thunderbird and I always have to hide it.
Where can I turn this "feature" off.
I want only to see my incoming mail list and want to choose myself if i want to open a mail or not.
