I use thunderbird with IMAP through vpn to my work site. Our site uses single-sign-on to connect to our mail server.

Sometimes my thunderbird client cannot authenticate to the server. The behavior is inconsistent. When I first start up thunderbird, one of 3 things happens:

a) Thunderbird logs me in via single-sign-on without prompting for my password.

b) Thunderbird gives me a login window, allows me to enter my password, and logs me in.

c) Thunderbird gives me a blank login window. The status bar at the bottom of the main screen says it is sending login information, but it has none to send. I never get logged in.

Under behaviors (a) and (b), the thunderbird status bar at the bottom of the main window says it is sending login information, opening INBOX, and downloading messages.

Sometimes restarting thunderbird or rebooting my laptop fixes behavior (c), and sometimes not.

When I'm connected, I can see my saved passwords via the Thunderbird Settings->Privacy & Security ->Passwords->Saved Passwords list. When I keep getting the blank login window, this list is empty.

I'm using thunderbird 115.12.2 on a mac running macOS Sonoma 14.5.

This problem was first noticed soon after I upgraded to thunderbird 15.8.0.

This behavior was duplicated by our support staff using thunderbird on Windows.

I don't have any data to show whether the problem happens when I am connected directly to my site's internal network. I'm not connected to that network frequently enough to be able to test the behavior, since it is so inconsistent.

My thunderbird server settings are:

``` Server Type: IMAP Mail Server Hostname xxxxx.xxxx.xxxx Port 993 Username xxxx@xxxx.xxx Connection security SSL/TLS Authentication method OAuth2 ```
Thanks for any help.
Hi,
I have used thunderbird as a default email client solely for the purposes of working with Autoquotes software which auto populates links in the form of the body of an email. Typically, I select email on the Auotquotes program and a Thunderbird email pops up with the subject line being the Quote name, and the Body of the email containing the links. I've included a screenshot attached of how it SHOULD look.
I just installed thunderbird and autoquotes on a new computer. However when I choose to email the quote, the thunderbird email window DOES pop up, the quote name is in the subject line, however there is NOTHING in the body of the email.
Is there any way to fix this?
Thank you for your help!
and I immediately began scrambling to get it back. I found this somewhere: "Don't Delete Files" is the preferred option because it saves the old profile's folder and allows you to recover the files to a new profile. So that gave me hope because that's what I had clicked (unfortunately, it was right before I saw the cancel button over on the right). That's what I get for being in a hurry I guess.
Anyhow, after 4 days of reading support forums and tons of trial and error, I'm no closer to restoring that profile than when I first started (although I've learned a lot about what does NOT work).
Btw, both my profiles have always been set up as POP3 at Gmail, although if I ever get this current problem sorted out I'll be shopping for a different POP3 provider. But that's another story.
I know how to create a new profile with Profile Manager. And I found the Profiles folders under both Thunderbird folder as well as ThunderbirdOLD folder. Have I been on the right track so far?
In the Thunderbird/Profiles folder, I don't see a folder with the deleted profile name (except the new ones (duds) I've since created ). On the other hand, I don't see the name of the profile that I did NOT delete either, but somehow it seems to be working just fine. Maybe it's the ".default" folder or ".default-release" folder? I've only ever had two profiles and I may have created the non-deleted profile first, so did that one end up being named .default? -shrug- I have no clue.
Anyhow, in the ThunderbirdOLD/Profiles folder, I also see ".default" as well as ".default-release" folders too. But in addition, I'm seeing a ".deletedprofile" named folder. So that's where I originally thought my several dozen email folders with several thousand emails and Address Book etc are hiding. But I've copied all the above mentioned folders into the several new Profiles I've created, on a trial and error basis but so far..... no luck. All I get when I open one is the new set up screen to set up a new pop3 account.... which I can do, but that's just starting from scratch without any of my saved data. I'm running out of ideas.
Where am I going wrong?
Hey guys, the client I work for provided my with MS account to be used for communication. Since I am on Linux, these two things doesn't really bond well :) I was using mostly web access for MS Teams and Outlook OWA ...
However, I figured that I would love to try Thunderbird for at least emails (so I got them all my email at one place)...
After some discussion with client's ITHD (after they changed my license to E3 type) I managed to get the email working - so I can send and receive emails ... However, I cannot see the calendar so it's still almost useless for me for I don't see meeting request.
Any idea how to fix that? did any of you guys face the same?
Hello everyone,
I'm facing a problem with Thunderbird. I have my own mail server that uses an SSL certificate issued by GoDaddy. I checked the certificate and contacted support; they assured me the certificate is valid and not revoked or expired (see OCSP-Check.jpg)*.
However, when I try to configure my account on Thunderbird, it doesn't work. I receive an error stating that the certificate is revoked (see Error-Console.jpg)* and (Error-MSG.jpg).
Disabling the OCSP check allows it to work, but I need to understand why this is happening only in Thunderbird.
I reiterate that it is working normally on Outlook and Android
Some information about my mail server:
Software: Zimbra 8.8.15 OS: Debian APACHE IMAP port: 993 SMTP port: 465 SSL
If you need any further information, I'll be happy to provide it.
Thanks in advance.
Is Mozilla working on the below email I have received from Microsoft? "The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.
What do you need to do?
If you are receiving this email, you are currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to connect to your Outlook.com email account. You will need to upgrade your third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods.
Microsoft provides free versions of Outlook for your PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices which can be easily downloaded and connect to your email account. Using an updated version of an Outlook application will ensure you are connecting in the most secure way.
How can you set up your Gmail, Apple Mail, or other third-party mail application?
Various non-Microsoft applications will have their own steps for connecting to your Outlook.com email account using modern authentication methods. See our help article - Modern Authentication Methods now needed to continue syncing Outlook Email in non-Microsoft email apps. However, you may need to contact the creators of those applications to provide you with instructions. In many cases, simply removing and re-adding your account with the latest version of that application will configure it to use modern authentication methods.
Hi, I'm using Thunderbird 115.4.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro. Ever since the Supernova update, TB crashes pretty much daily (up to 3x a day). I turned off auto-updates as soon as I found out how to, since everything was so confusing and didn't work the way I was used to. Now I'm afraid to do any more updates since I don't want a whole bunch of other things to get screwed up. I have learned to kind of work around the problem areas, though it's frustrating. But I don't want to spend another 10-15 hours trying to fix new problems. Any suggestions? I can't seem to find any information about people who have had this crashing problem and then had it resolved through an update. Thanks
Previous thread with the same subject reported that Avast Antivirus might have found something suspicious in my mail file and locked the file. I followed the instructions to exclude my entire mail folder and maybe the parent file above it from Avast's scanning. However, it doesn't seem that whatever locking or corruption might have been caused by Avast Is going to be undone by telling Avast not to scan that folder anymore. How to unlock the file or reverse the corruption that was done already? My only backup is a full disk image. And it doesn't appear that Write access has been turned off with regard to any of my computer's users -- System, Administrator, or myself. Shouldn't any locking that Avast has done be evident from the file or folder's Properties or Advanced Properties? This is pretty much a business-killing problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Similar to [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/que.../1307490], Thunderbird inserts line breaks at a certain interval of which I am not sure the purpose. I had the issue of the first article, so I set mailnews.wraplength to 0 as was suggested, which fixed the line breaks every line, but there are still line breaks every few lines. There are no line breaks in the Thunderbird composer or inbox, the screenshot attached shows how the line breaks appear on all other email clients I have tested (Outlook for desktop in the screenshot, but also Outlook for web, Outlook for Android, Gmail web, Gmail for Android).
Changing between "Paragraph" and "Body Text" or HTML and plain text does not seem to solve the issue.
Thank you for your time.
Hi there
I have a probably easy to solve issue that has been causing a lot of headaches of late. Previously, as seen in the screenshot, if I wanted to filter out messages say from "PC-welt" or contained that term, I just needed to type that term in the searchbox shown and immediately all messages with it would automatically be sorted out, without even hitting the search button. One can for example then do a bulk deletion. That screenshot would be showing a list of messages with "pc-welt", say in the senders info or subject.
For some reason I yet do not know, this has ceased happening and in fact as shown, nothing happens at all, even after hitting the search button. Why is this and how can I come back to THIS function? If one uses the "Quich filter", which I DO NOT LIKE, the results are opened in a new tab and not in a form like the preferred option. I do not remember making any Thunderbird filter settings and if I did then unintended. How can I get back to the function of just typing a term, with all results being immediately filtered within that window so I can for example select and delete them?
I have the latest version 115.13.0 (64-bit) (portable)
Thank you in advance.
First off, this is an answer I wanted to share rather than a request for help. Spent significant time over the weekend helping family/friends with Virgin Media account and Thunderbird [Version 115.13.0 (64-bit)] on Win10. Virgin Media have introduced app passwords recently and all was fine until a recent update of Thunderbird. Ever since the account has refused to connect to the IMAP server. Other accounts with similar authentication methods worked but this one failed.
Issue Reproduction : System : Win10, Thunderbird 115.13.0, Norton VPN running
1. Have Thunderbird configured with the virginmedia account (by the time it worked we had removed the app password from the Thunderbird saved passwords) 2. Select the VirginMedia account INBOX in the left hand window of Thunderbird 3. Click on the download (Get) new message button (cloud with the down arrow, top left of Thunderbird) 4. Thunderbird then says it is connecting to the IMAP server (bottom of mail window), waits a while, then the message disappears and nothing happens. No new messages download, no request for the account password, no error messages, just nothing. 5. On trying to send mail there is no request for the password the system just refuses to connect to the SMTP server.
I had checked a few things on the cmd line and found that the DNS resolution of the virginmedia IMAP server was failing on lookup every time. Below is incorrect: Non-authoritative answer: Name: imap.virginmedia.com Address: 10.100.10.100
With the VPN turned off, the following was the result : Non-authoritative answer: Name: imap-virginmedia-com.edge.unified.services Address: 84.116.6.19 Aliases: imap.virginmedia.com
This is the solution, I found that worked for this instance. But as mentioned I spent significant time search for answer in the settings on Tbird and looking online for ideas. There was nothing that specifically reference this but a couple of ideas lead me to this.
SOLUTION 1. Start Thunderbird, go to the Tools Menu, then Settings and select it 2. In the new tab/window that opens select General on the left hand side, then scroll down to Network and Disk space 3. Click on the Settings button next to Configure how Thunderbird connects to the Internet 4. Scroll down the 'Connection Settings window that opens, to the bottom of the page 5. Tick the box next to Enable DNS over HTTPS (I left the Use Provider set to Custom and the Custom field blank) then Click the OK button. Make sure you click ok, don't just close the window. 6. Then I did a restart of Thunderbird (probably not necessary but just to make sure changes had propagated through the system). 7. Then repeated the download of new messages request with the VirginMedia account, was then prompted for the app password, which I re-entered and marked to save. New messages were then downloaded to the system. 8. Composed a new message and sent it, re-entering the password & marking save it, again (as separate entries in the password table for IMAP & SMTP). New message was sent successfully, copied to the sent folder and received correctly at the destination.
As mentioned, caveats : I don't work for Mozilla, I am a user like you, this worked for this system. I have taken the time to type this out in the hope it helps someone else, as I couldn't find this exact solution on the forums I searched. Thanks
