I think it could be worth considering the possibility of updating High Memory Usage this being based on
- high interest subject in the Support Forum
it is generating threads with 1000s of votes about problems as I mentioned in /forums/contributors/705277?page=2#post-36216
- a high number of unresolved bugs (& any fixes probably will not hit Firefox 4 ) summarised in meta bugs see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657232#c7
- does not cover new or proposed new Firefox features. or improvements
- does not really mention page file/hdd use only RAM, and as Verdi pointed out many users do not know what values to expect, that could be included.
These are only vague ideas. There is of course the argument that we already have too many KB articles, but I think that concern over memory use is indisputably a major problem and should be addressed better.
Recommending users upgrade is probably going to be overtaken by events, given the fast release cycle and the proposed silent updates, but it could be pointed out if particular bugs are unfixed in one version but fixed in another, and that is minor change once listed that should not cause localisation headaches.
The article mentions tools but no mention of about:memory, (then we have other forthcoming changes eg about:compartments & Electrolysis)
Some users will be complaining about page file & hdd use, would there be any useful generic advice there (probably no need to manual defrag modern file systems, but would for instance using virtual drives for cache files help) all I am saying is could some links be added to some other potentially helpful advice - and if so suggestions please. (that may be useful in any event in answering questions)
Where else can someone with problems turn, bugzilla is intimidating and unuseable to most of us. I note one of the bugzilla triagers is hoping to write a guide
One thing I want to do is write a wiki page explaining how to submit a useful leak report, in an attempt to avoid the vague reports that never go anywhere. But the improved about:memory is a big part of that, and it won’t land until Firefox 6. Nicholas Nethercote
