Have already tried the various solutions suggested in support pages for this problem. Have also re-installed from full installation file instead of automatic update. Nothing helps.

dancer1, there is No need to go to a random unofical download that site when there is no guarantee it is what they claim. It could be bundled with a toolbar, a renamed RC or Beta or such for example. As you saw that site was not giving you what it claimed to be but a different version. Also that random site only has en-US versions.

Mozilla has all Old EOL and current versions archived at ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/

Mozila does not make the old versions readily available on mozilla.org because they may be behind on security vulnerabilities. Only Firefox 3.6.24 and 8.0.* are currently up to date. http://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/

You are using Firefox 4 which is outdated, run a clean install of Firefox 8

As I said in my original post, I've already tried a clean install of Firefox 8.0.1 and this has NOT solved the problem. There's no point continuing to install a program that won't run. I'm currently running the outdated Firefox 4 because it's the only version for which I have the full installation file. I'm looking for a link to the download file for Firefox 6 or 7 or even 8.0, which worked ok. Can anyone help, please?

you can get Firefox 7.0.1(English) for Windows 7 from here

edit: removed unofficial fillhippo link.

Thanks for this. However, the url no longer exists and I've searched File Hippo without finding any Firefox version other than 8.0.1 or later.

(Previous Firefox versions used to be available on the Mozilla site but it appears they no longer keep them available.)

Do you or anyone else have another suggestion where I could download a recent version of Firefox (NOT v8.0.1)? Searching the web is not yielding anything.

Thanks.

I've finally found a site that hosts older versions of Firefox as well as various other software. I've downloaded and installed v7.0.1.

For anyone else who may need these files, the url is: oldversion com/Mozilla-Firefox.html (However, beware the file marked v8.0. It actually installs Aurora.)

Message to Mozilla: How about reverting to hosting the previous versions of Firefox so we can downgrade when the latest versions simply won't run.

I hope this may be helpful to someone else.

Thank you, James. I will certainly use the url you provided to download v8.0 which is what I wanted. (BTW. I wasn't stupid enough to install Aurora when I saw it wasn't the file it was supposed to be.)

I agree that I should not have had to go to an unofficial download site. I'm well aware of the risks of using such sites. But I searched the Mozilla and Firefox sites repeatedly for several days seeking different version nos of Firefox (including 8.0) and my searches have returned no matches. If Mozilla allowed this url to be found, it would make things much easier.

I understand the concerns about security vulnerabilities but a version of Firefox that hangs (permanently) as soon as it opens is of no use and does not allow us to search for solutions. In this case, the only option is to downgrade and use that older version to get online and then search for possible solutions to the upgrade problems. It isn't about using the older version indefinitely, just for problem solving so we can upgrade to the latest secure version.

I agree totally with dancer1. Older versions should be "findable" on Mozilla.com. AND ... it would be great if I could easily find user reviews. I normally wait awhile before installing the most recent version. It helps a lot if I can discover 1) the release date (i.e., how long has the newest version been out), 2) common problems and the dates they were found and fixed, and 3) user reviews. Maybe this is all available somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it.
