Plain and simple. An app for my university (student) which requires Java Desktop 6.0.2.9 no longer works. It's only since the install of FFox 8 and since it uses Java I can only assume the incompatibility with Java Desktop 6.0.29 is the problem.

Where can I download a copy of FFox 7 until this issue is resolved.

Firefox 7? I've had this problem since Firefox 6! I've had to stay with Firefox 5 until either Firefox or Java makes this work. Anyway, just look up Firefox Old Version and you should be able to find something. :)

I have this same issue but now I think it is also some other add on that is not working because prior to the upgrade to FF8 I was able to use my university's website, now I cannot. Even the FF support page doesn't look normal when I go to it on FF8 but it looks and works fine using IE9. All the graphics are missing. Any ideas? Do we have any ETA to get JAVA to work? This is most frustrating. I had to revert over to IE9 in order to get anything to work. Bad thing my university doesn't want you to use IE9 yet so now I am in a pickle.

This worked for me.

To see whether your browser is configured to use Java or not, first open Windows Control Panel. From the Start menu button, select Settings, then Control Panel to open the Java Control Panel, click on the Java Coffee Cup logo icon in the Control Panel.

For Java version 6.0 and above:

Double-click the icon to open Java Control Panel.
In Java Control Panel, click the Advanced tab.
Click on + icon next to Default Java for browsers.
Make sure the box next to Mozilla is checked. After I loaded up Firefox 8 this was not checked.
If it is not checked, click the checkbox to enable Java for your Web browser.
   Click Apply.

I reinstalled java. After that everything worked fine for me.

The latest versions of Java, including Java SE 6 Update 29, are available at:

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

Some programs do indeed require a specific version of Java be installed on the user's machine in order to function, and will not yet work with Java 7.

If you have problems with Java after a Firefox update in Windows:

  • Uninstall Java,
  • Then navigate to your Firefox program folder and see if there is a Plugins subfolder. If there is, look in that folder for old and leftover Java plug-ins that did not get removed when you uninstalled Java.

If you're not sure which files in that folder are old Java plug-ins, right-click each file and select: Properties -> Description
The description page will give you information about the file so you can tell if it's one that should be deleted. If it is, delete the file (you'll need Administrator permissions to do this).
  • Then, reinstall Java.

from: http://forums.techarena.in/technology-internet/1429584.htm , This worked for me:- "first open the Firefox browser and after that type: about:config on the address bar and after that make click on enter key. Now you will get the confirmation and after that make click on the "I'll be careful, I promise!” button. Now you will get the windows and under that make right click on the empty space and after that select the new and under that select the Boolean. Now on the Boolean windows type the extensions.checkCompatibility.6.0 has preference name and after that ... click on the False and after that select the ok button. Now once you done and after that restart the browser "

I have this issue, right after I updated to Java .29. I was able to fix this by Backing up my book marks with the backup option in "show all bookmarks". Then I un-installed firefox completely. Checked the box to remove all personal data, like book marks. I then re-installed firefox 8.0.1 and all my java started working again. Then I Imported my book marks I had saved and all was well. FF needs to figure this out so a re-install is not needed to get Java to work with it. LAME!!! I hate IE!!!
