This may be caused by using software from Trusteer Raport. If you need to use such software for banking first of all check that the software is up-to-date; if they have released a newer version it may now work.

You could disable or uninstall the software and use firefox portable with firefox 3.6 for banking and firefox 7 for day to day browsing. ( Other reports have suggested firefox 3.6 may not crash when Trusteer is in use. )

If the software is a plugin it will still cause a problem in Firefox's safe mode, and you may need to uninstal it from the Windows XP control panel. This is currently a common reason of firefox crashes, and there are a few threads about it in this forum e.g.: /questions/892644#answer-269889

Thank you John99. I removed Trusteer Rapport and that solved the problem! I filed a report with Trusteer about the situation so perhaps they can find a permanent solution.

judybh,
Glad it worked. I had Trusteer software on one of my computers after someone had been using it for purchases, I understand in some instances this will be important software because it will be required for mainstream transactions involving well known Companies.

Alice, thanks for fixing the link.

I received this response from Trusteer: "The issue which you are experiencing is known to us. We are working hard on solving this issue and expect the problem to be fixed in a future release.

We would be happy to notify you once a version with the fix is released.

Should you need additional assistance, feel free to contact us by submitting the following form: http://www.trusteer.com/support/submit-ticket We also have helpful information available in our FAQ: http://www.trusteer.com/support/faq

Thanks for posting back.

Whatever the problem it seems serious and to have reverberating financial consequences.

They say (per your post above)

We would be happy to notify you once a version with the fix is released.

That appears to imply they are aware they have a known problem with the current software.

If I look quickly at the pages you linked to I see no indication of this being a known problem perhaps you have a better link ?

If Trusteer admit it is a known problem surely it would help if that problem is openly explained with a link to their own latest information about the problem. Perhaps they may also wish to look more closely at there own faqs.

Should you need additional assistance, feel free to contact us by submitting the following form: http://www.trusteer.com/support/submit-ticket We also have helpful information available in our FAQ: http://www.trusteer.com/support/faq .

I am not sure, if they admit there is a known problem that submitting a ticket would help. That just creates necessary noise & extra support work, surely a simple link to an explanatory page would be a better solution.

Sorry to be repetitive, but I do not see Trusteer are helping their end user clients if they use firefox, and that leads me to wonder how far the banking systems, as primary clients are aware of this problem, because it appears from my possibly simplistic viewpoint, they will be potentially loosing custom, transactions and hence money.

I received this email from Trusteer today but I am hesitant to download the new Rapport as they only "suspect" that the problems have been resolved.

"Thank you for contacting Trusteer Technical Support.

We would like to recommend you to download Rapport's updated version, as we suspect the problems you were experiencing with Firefox have been resolved. You can download the latest version here: http://download.trusteer.com/Gcur4Wtnu/RapportSetup.exe

Please reboot your computer after the installation completes and tell us if the problem persists. If the problem persists, we would be very interested in fixing it.

They are being helpful and giving you one to one support so, if I were in your position, I would follow their suggestions. If it fails you always have the alternative of uninstalling Trusteer. It is not malware and you are dealing with a reputable Company, even if their product does sometimes and repeatedly cause, or be implicated, in firefox problems.

If a new install of trusteer software helps, others may find it useful to know

  • the product name and version of their software
  • your OS (Windows etc & version , whether 32 or 64 bit - {32 bitXP per aside ?})
  • the version of Firefox (if you used Firefox 7.0.1 you may have updated to 8)

I have read that Firefox 3.6 is the most stable version of the browser followed by 7.1 but what really has me confused about this issue is - Why is the software now, so strangely part of our computer lexicon in the first place? It has come out of the blue with no pedigree, dubious origins and fanfared by some large banks to what end? It appears to be causing doubt, user issues, is a RAM hogger and seems to track online activity and keep records of that activity. For whom? Is it, in actual fact, a Hybrid Market Analysis Agent and not primarily security software as suggested to ordinary customers?

I have been in situations where the only method of proceeding easily with an online banking transaction is to use Trusteer, but I do not normally use it myself.

Probably the whys and wherfores of Trusteer use are outside the scope of this forum, other than that from my recollections I believe it sometimes is implicated in problems of Firefox use.

iirc the last time I was involved with a thread about Trusteer, the problems were resolved once the user updated to the latest software version.

If you want to know more about Trusteer and its privacy & data gathering policies no doubt there is information on the Trusteer website and the sites of the Banks and Retailers that use Trusteer.
