7.01 freezes my laptop and will not shut down unless I close the application on task manager.

I cannot even use it on Windows 7/ 64 bit without major problems, so I reinstalled version 3.617.

Chosen solution

I might have discovered the solution without starting over with all your places and bookmarks.

Right after i installed 7.0.1 over a week ago, every 10-30 min When i would be watching videos online, it would freeze for 20-30 seconds. Firefox would say ( Not responding) both firefox and the plugin container process would be very large memory files. I tried to go back to Firefox 5.0. No avail it would still freeze.I tried to disable the plugin container . no good. I tried to adjust memory or cache or plugin settings in “about:config”.Nothing fixed it!

I finally discovered why my Firefox 7.01 was periodic hanging fix. It is something to do with some of your personal files. download this this add on and install it https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/

or you can Google "places maintenance Firefox"

After you install the add on, restart Firefox.go to "tools", then "add ons" and then click “extensions” tab ,then click' options" on the "places maintenance" entry. choose "ALL' or just "expire" and hit "execute", then wait until its done., restart Firefox. should be fine then and all my bookmarks, customizations ,settings, and history stays untouched!

After i did this my Firefox did not freeze once for over 3 days straight. Might not work for everyone. I already read that Mozilla is aware of the problem and are working on a fix it in the full version of 8( the 8 beta did not fix the problem for me) . But they said this is a good temporary fix at least,( might be permanent)

For me at least ,Firefox works fine in 7 now. perfect actually. And many people i saw on similar forums had similar problems.

Enjoy. Hope this helped

I am actually using I.E. 9 top post this. I have not had to use I.E. for years, but since 7.01 I cannot get any links to work without my Firefox staying in perpetual "loading" mode.

I diabled all plug ins and extensions, i told it to go into "safe" mode, I cleared all history and cookies, i downgraded the open connections to 48, I installed the "places" thing that somebody recommended... nothing is working.

I even uninstalled all known traces of Firefox and reinstalled, and the problem remains.

My conclusion: Use another browser until this problem is clearly fixed.

The imajakov post above worked for me where I used the places-maintenance add-on. Thank you, thank you, thank you. The other good news though, is that I discovered Chrome now handles Zotero...

I had migrated away from Firefox after an upgrade which caused "not responding' freezes at ever increasing intervals.

In hopes more folks find this thread, process analytics were yielding this error message during freezes: "'One or more threads of firefox.exe are waiting to finish network I/O"

Since this solution is superior to uninstalls, playing with registry entries, and otherwise generating new profiles, I strongly suggest Firefox support make this a dominant suggestion for folks who are suffering from this issue.

I see thousands of threads all over the Internet regarding the 'not responding' message, and telling folks it is their add-ons or some other issue is terrible service and just general obfuscation.

In fact, the issue is so large and prevalent if I were Firefox, I would point their threads to a common page with a checklist of solutions to try, starting with the one above. There is a problem out there, and it is becoming a PR problem as well.
