You can set location bar autocomplete behavior in options window - privacy panel, the bottom section.
The "AwesomeBar" and "keyword shortcuts" are what put Firefox way above the other browsers. By destroying the Awesome Bar you lose a lot of functionality others take for granted.
Of course it needs a little customization work so that it looks and works better.
Mike Beltzner had a good video on the Awesome bar (he speaks fast), I don't like the other videos I've seen though. What the intent is that if you type words or strings of characters in any order after a bit of usage it will pick up what you actually want from looking at your history (higher ratings for more recent), and your typed entries (highest ratings) and your bookmarks.
By the way deleting your history does not affect bookmarks so they will still show up even if you select an single unwanted item and use the "Del" it will remove the history but not the bookmark, it will still appear if the lowered rating is sufficient to show. Bookmarks should show a star (or other bookmark symbol) on the right.
The AwesomeBar search is what you get in the location bar drop-down when you enter strings of characters that exist in the Title and/or url address of a previously visited site or one that you have in your bookmarks. You may enter those strings in any order and even add a qualifier. You see those choices before you press "Enter".

The two extensions, I would suggest are:
- "oldbar" extension to view autocomplete as single rows as in Firefox 2
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/6227/ - As a companion for "oldbar" also install "Locationbar Limit" to increase the number of results, mine is set to 80 with 30 visible before scrolling
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/locationbar-limit/
If you really don't want it Tools > Options > Privacy
- Location Bar: When using the location bar suggest: Nothing
