Please do the following.

  • In the location bar, type about:config and hit Enter.
  • In the filter at the top, type: keyword.URL
  • Double click it and remove whatever's in there and replace it with http://www.google.com/search?q=
  • Go to File | Exit
  • Restart Firefox and in the address bar, type: about:blank and hit Enter.
  • Go to Tools | Options | General.
  • Make sure it says "Show My Homepage" in the first dropdown menu.
  • Click the button called "Use Current Pages" to set the homepage to the one you have on the screen.

Xircal, thanks for replay. I did it 3 times exactly as it is in your instruction. But it always use old URL by opening in new Tab. Can it be protected against changing?

Could you open about:config again and in the filter at the top, type: babylon

For every setting you find with that name in it, right click it and choose Reset.

For the following settings which might also have the word "babylon" in them, right click and choose "Modify". Then delete "babylon" and replace it with the word Google if a reset doesn't do that automatically.

Then close Firefox via File | Exit and restart it again.

Check the keyword.URL though to add the link to Google again if necessary.

Thank you Xircal, but it also doesn't help. Maybe it's a time to start using another browser ((. I just don't understand why Firefox preinstall this and don't give option to change it...

It's not part of the installation. Apps like this come as part of bundled software and if you don't uncheck the boxes during the installation, you get these 'free extras'. If you're intent on just clicking the 'Next' button, it's very easy to miss them. Babylon comes bundled with 'free' mp3 converter.

EDIT: try doing this: http://www.ehow.com/how_5104258_remove-babylon-toolbar.html

I just updated previous version and haven't any options to check or uncheck bundled software. I didn't find "Babylon Toolbar" in programs window and Babylon folder in "Programs Files" folder as it described in link which you posted.

I uninstalled Firefox (didn't remove my personal settings). Downloaded and installed it again. Now it works perfectly. (By the way it didn't propose any bundled software).

Thank you very much for helping me solving this problem and have a nice weekend :)

Babylon appears to get installed with an IM Messenger called Digsby as well. There's some info on the subject at the foot of this review: http://techshali.com/digsby-instant-messenger-and-email-manager-social-networks/

To remove Babylon from your system:

  • Click on start - go to control panel - go to add or remove - scroll down until you find the icon for Babylon and uninstall.

Once that's done do the following:

  • At the top of your screen click on tools - scroll down until you find the add-ons - click on the icon and scroll down for Babylon and uninstall.

You will be asked to restart your Firefox again. click on yes and when your browser starts again it will restore to what ever search engine you had at default before Babylon got on your system.

A simple yet effective way to diable the computer to connect to Babylon all together is to modify the "Hosts" file.

You'll find the file at "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" (no filtype suffix).

Open it with i.e. Notepad, it should look somewhat like this:

  1. Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
  2. This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
  3. This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
  4. entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
  5. be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
  6. The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
  7. space.
  8. Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
  9. lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
  10. For example:
  11. 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
  12. 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
  1. localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
  2. 127.0.0.1 localhost

Now you simply add one line like this: 127.0.0.1 search.babylon.com

Save the file and your coputer will never get in touch with babylon search again, not even if you type the address into your browser!
