In Firefox 3.6 there is a drop down history box that show up next to the Forward and Back arrows when you press the little drop down arrow next to the Forward and Backward arrows. This drop down box shows the current 12 (approximately) History items for each tab that is currently active and visible. This little arrow and the associated History drop-down box is gone (missing) in Firefox 4 RC. Please restore it. I need it to easily function efficiently. I must return to version 3.6 until you get it restored again to the current version 4.

In Firefox 4 you can keep the left mouse button pressed on either B/F button for short while to open the tab history list. You can also right-click either button to open that list.

This is not a solution to the problem, which is stated. The drop down box is one of the most used features of the browser, any most used item like this needs reasonable thought before removing. An option to use the old method is a minimum requirement.

Clicking and holding is slow and takes time to wait, plus for those with disabilities using very different pointing devices should not need to stick and hold, or use a 2nd button.

Using the right key means I need to use a different key, and for people on laptops the or other pointing devices besides a proper mouse, its a hassle to need to use the 2nd button.

The improvement is slow, requires you to use a 2nd button, and gives no improvement to the dedicated button. The new features of holding down or right click are fine, so long as the faster button click option remains.

Its a fairly big mistake to take away a feature, when there is no reason. Click hold and wait....is waiting too long.

The problem that people are continuing to tag as problem, is not fixed. Please return the functionality as was working before. Thanks

Found this experimental new plugin to reinstall the feature. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/backforedrop/ I can only hope this feature is integrated back into the 4.0 release and thus supported by the themes that come out. As of now the arrow pointing downwards is not part of the 4.0 themes. Many thanks to kaiengert for the plugin in its first iteration.

And thank you for the tip. I just installed it, and it does exactly what it's supposed to and nothing else. The lack of theme-ness is not a problem for me, as it's small and unobtrusive. I have my arrow back!...sniff.

Right-click or left-click-and-hold the back or forward arrow drops a history for the tab down, AFAIK exactly the same functionality as the little down arrow in 3.6.

It isn't a great solution as it isn't intuitive nor is the required mouse action consistent:

  • The back history appears if you hold down the left mouse button or click the right mouse button on the back arrow.
  • The forward list appears only if you click the right mouse button on the forward arrow.

So left mouse button does nothing on the forward arrow and holding the right mouse button on either won't give you anything until you release the button.

Too easy to forget or misclick and end up clicking the left button by accident, which has obvious consequences on the back arrow...

You people are nuts. Here I am saying to myself, "huh, what happened to the back button drop-down?" that's silly...

I do a google search, first page, first entry, i find this thread, and the first reply gives me the answer to get the functionality back. Hoorah!

And then, I say to myself, "this should be one of those question, 1 reply threads that are nice, neat, and tidy, case closed." But alas, everyone here is going on about how it's the end of their efficient browsing on mozilla!

You guys are wonko! If anything, not having to click that tiny little sliver of a button is a improvement/relief, now I can drunken mouse stumble over to the BIG arrow, right click anywhere I damn please, and whammo! there's my history.

In this day and age of tabbed browsing, i rarely need the drop down button anyways, for me it's only those rare occasions when I want to shimmy back, like 6 pages to bypass form information entered or something like that.

Way to go Firefox! You just made, MY day! :)
