I did a fresh OS install and forgot to backup my ff-sync key. I had it saved to a file but I forgot to backup that file. How do I recover it? I only used it on one machine to keep track of bookmarks so there are no copies of it elsewhere.

Sorry, without your sync key your data can't be decrypted - the server won't even allow that data to be downloaded. The only place that your sync key is stored is on the computers you have setup to use sync.

This might sound a little crazy. The only thing you could do is create a new sync account and save the new sync key to a different partition (where you don't often format). Now log off from the new account and enter into your old account. Enter the new saved sync key into it. Now if you want to you can delete the new account by going here https://services.mozilla.com/delete-account/ Note: I don't think you can recover your old bookmarks, history etc. by this method.
