At least look in the options before asking a question here. Using grammar helps too.

If someone came up to you and said "I want to change the search engine that firefox default home using" you wouldn't have a clue what they meant.

Not even one sentence makes sense. Maybe that sounds rude, but at least TRY to be correct. Just because it's the internet doesn't mean spelling and grammar don't matter.

From what you've written, I can't even tell if you're trying to change the homepage or your search provider.

Try replying in English that we can actually read, it will help you get what you want. ;)

Hi I know this has been a fair bit of problems to some people so I will try to help, I don't know if this will do any damage but I doubt it will What I did was first type down about:config (in the URL bar) this brought up a page where I clicked on promise to be careful. In the filter I then searched for ask.com (make sure the toolbar and software have been removed firstly from the control panel of the computer and Firefox) Now just look through and reset all the ones that have something to do with ask.com on them (right click, reset). This should fix up most of the problems.

If not I had to do this extra step where I had to reset these two things (search for them on filter: ) browser.startup.homepage_override.buildID

browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone

This fixed my problem and now on Firefox 4 I can go to my home page (about:home) and the search works fine with Google :D

Hope this helps

That solution is helpful to people, but not to me, as my default is Yahoo search. I can't find anything in about:config that has to do with the home page search. I've already fixed searching in the address bar to google, but that home page is still yahoo search.

I tried trustnoone's solution, but now the search is using yahoo, not google

Make sure that your default search engine is google. The reason you have yahoo is because it is your default search engine. What I did to change this was after right clicking and hitting reset, hit enter then a little screen will come up and you type in google into the lower box.

Hi everyone thats good, I hope I helped :D Also as Birdinsky said, make sure the default is set to Google and not Yahoo by trying his way.

If there still is any problems I haven't actually tried this so I don't really know if its very helpful or if it will do anything, but if you hold shift while opening Firefox (without having any other Firefox windows open) a pop up box will appear and in there you can reset the default search engines.

cheers

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Okay, I was dealing with this problem, too. Now, I've come up with the solution. My Firefox 4 Start Page is now using the Google search engine!

Follow these simple steps:

  1. Type "about:config" on the URL bar and press Enter. This will bring you to the browser's control panel.
  2. If a warning happens to show, just ignore it. Rest assured. We are not altering any major parts that will lead to failure. Therefore, just click the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button.
  3. You'll be brought to a page with various parameters and values of settings. To make it faster and easier, a filter bar is provided on the upper part of the window, just bellow the URL bar and Toolbars. Type "browser.search.order.1" on the Filter bar. Only 1 entry will now be listed. Reset the setting value (right-click > Reset). The value should now reset to "Google". If the value doesn't change to "Google", simply double-click the value and type it manually.
  4. Go back to the Filter bar and type "browser.search.defaultenginename". Again, reset the value so that it changes to "Google". If the value doesn't change to "Google", simply double-click the value and type it manually.
  5. It's done! Close the tab and you can try searching with Google on your Firefox 4 Start Page. The "Google" logo will now be shown to the left of the search text area.

I hope this guide solves your problem. Good luck!

Here is the fix that worked for me:

  1. Type about:config in the address bar, select I be careful..".
  2. Go to browser.startup.homepage. This field and the next two were user set and bold for me.
  3. On each of the of the 3 fields (that start with browser.startup.homepage) press right mouse button, select Reset.
  4. Restart firefox. It will probalby show some "Welcome to Firefox" page and thats it.
