Is ff-update.exe from * safe to install?

Hi,

I have just received the following message: "You have chose to open ff-update.exe .... from: *. Would you like to save this file."

I've never seen this message before and can't find any references to either the exe file or the http address. Is this file and/or http address safe?

I would not trust that file. The Firefox setup file will have a name similar to "Firefox Setup 3.6.9.exe" and you should only download it direct from Mozilla. That site is not part of Mozilla.

I will just ignore it. How did you receive that message? By email or pop-up?

As a common sense, if you didn't ask for it, don't take it.

Thanks for your comments. The message was via a pop-up.

By way of background I installed Firefox 4b5 yesterday and thought that although the message was strange, it might in some way be related to the beta version. If ff-update.exe is a new bit of malware aimed at Firefox, hopefully other folk who receive the message will read this thread.

I've got a somewhat similar issue. I got a message during a firefox-session that asked if i would download and install the latest update for Firefox. I chose only to download the file, not execute it. It was named "firefox-update.exe" Five minutes ago, Microsoft Security Essentials notified me that this file indeed was a Trojan, TrojanDownloader:Win32/renos.NO and removed it. So to all who might be reading this post, don't run any supposed update for Firefox unless you are 100% sure it comes directly from Mozilla's site. Read what TonyE said earlier in post.....

Firefox updates are never served as a small .exe file as it will be the usual full size .exe version that you can get at mozilla.com or done as a update in Firefox itself and is a .mar file.
