Question thread - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1106718 - brought out missing documentation about the Keyword field in about:preferences#search. No discernible way to add a keyword for a search engine or to add a keyword. The former "Manage Search Engine List" had an "Edit Keyword..." button to make the keyword field editable, but that is missing from the new "about:preferences#search" tab. cor-el pointed out that a double-click in that field is needed there to add or edit the Keyword, as with the new Logins Manager in Security which isn't documented here either - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/password-manager-remember-delete-change-and-import - which should be edited too, IMO. But the Logins Manager does have a context menu item for editing (and other functions), which IMO is more "discoverable" by fairly advanced users; more so than the double-click to get an editable text field w/ flashing cursor. And IMO - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-or-remove-search-engine-firefox - really belongs with - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/use-search-bar-firefox - rather than being a separate KB article. And it might be a good idea to add some "linkage" to - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-search-from-address-bar - along with an explanation of the difference between "Smart keywords" for Location bar searches via a bookmark and the Search Engine Keyword feature.

I agree. The in-product link from the Options/Preferences Search panel goes to: Use the Search bar in Firefox (Redirected from Search bar - add, change and manage search engines on Firefox) so this article should explain all of the Search options/preferences in the Search panel.

For the record, this article has been renamed again, from "Use the Search bar in Firefox and manage search engines" to Use the Search bar in Firefox. It's also been shortened, with new articles created (Change your default search settings in Firefox and Add or remove a search engine in Firefox) for the removed content (see /kb/use-search-bar-firefox/history). Background here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/add-or-remove-search-engine-firefox/discuss/6177 This article is still an in-product link from the Search panel "Help" link in Firefox options/preferences.

I'm not sure what happened here. This article was created to teach users about the search bar before there was a prefs panel for it. In bug 1102398, when devs needed an article to point the helptopic to, Joni pointed them to this article, saying it would be updated to cover the new prefs. In November of 2014, it looks like she did update it, but at some point since then, the content about the prefs UI was removed. I'm not sure why.

We need to improve search rankings for search customization. The marketing team also wants to promote search customization in a newsletter and it's very disorienting to users to be dropped off in the middle of an article. We're taking the appropriate sections from Use the Search bar in Firefox to create a new article about customization. We'll need to crosslink the articles to each other.

That article is about changing search settings from the Search Bar. So is the Change your default search settings in Firefox article, although that one is closer to describing the options available from the Search Panel.

Here's the current Search Panel that links to this article (looks to be the same since Firefox 38) Image:SearchPanel

We don't have to change the destination article if we just rename this article to something like "Search Panel" or "Search settings" and change the content to match the Search Panel options. We could then create a new article describing the Search Bar, if that's what we want to do, and change the links in articles that link here (other than the redirect from " Use the Search bar in Firefox and manage search engines"):

I wonder if the destination article for the help-topic link should be changed to Add or remove a search engine in Firefox.

Either that article or Change your default search settings in Firefox might be easier, if we change the in-product link to either one and edit the content (If we use the Add or remove a search engine in Firefox article we should also change the article title). There are a lot fewer articles that link to those articles.

I don't know. It seems there are conflicting philosophies here.

    • On one hand, we want separate articles for each task to help search results, and provide links that don't jump to the middle of an article.
    • On the other hand, we want don't want people to click on the help-topic link and force them to click on a link to a second article to explain the settings they see.

Ideally, the in-product link from the Search panel should go to a page that explains the available search settings.

The way to do that without filing a bug to change the destination article would be to rename this article, change the content, create a new article about the Search bar and then change the links in articles that link here to the new Search bar article. (I already updated most of the articles that link here with the current title of this article ... Forum Response - Changing the default search engine is pending review.)

    What do you think, Chris?

We'd have to create a new article anyway to describe the Search panel options and, by changing the content of this article we don't have to change the destination article (I don't know what that involves)

I have a revision pending to change the content of this article, so you'll know what I mean.

I assume it's very easy. When I was on the team, the redirects were in the htaccess file. You can still see them at http://svn.mozilla.org/projects/sumo/trunk/webroot/htaccess.dist

It was just a matter of editing one string in one file. Now that the redirects are in the database, I assume it's just as quick/easy. There may even be an admin panel for it. It's just a matter of finding an admin to do it.

I think it's better to change the one bad link to the article, instead of renaming it, and editing all other links to the article. That doesn't include links from the forum or outside of sumo.
