When you follow the instructions in the Remove search engines section for Firefox 34 it doesn't actually remove the engine. It just won't be displayed as an alternate "one click" search option in drop-down that appears when you start typing in the Search bar. Related bug:

I made an edit for fx 34 to change "Follow these steps to remove the search engines you don't need." to Follow these steps to remove alternate search engines that you don't want to display in the Search bar

I made a new revision to change the above to Follow these steps to remove alternate search engines you don't want to use in the Search bar.

I think we need to rephrase this to "hide search engines" or something to that effect.

The helpfulness rating for this article is low, and I think part of it comes from the fact that users can't remove search engines (feedback). Claiming that the instructions will remove search engine when they actually don't might increase their frustration.

I'll submit a revision and we can change it back when we actually have the ability to remove search engines.

This bug is now fixed and, according to the linked bug 1106559 it looks like the change will be be approved for aurora (36).

It's possible that the fix will also be made in beta (35) but there, the pref to enable this is apparently turned off by default - see comment 37 ...[User impact if declined]: impossible to add search keywords, move or remove search engines from the in-content preferences (ie. high impact on aurora where it's pref'ed on, and low impact on beta where it's off by default).

I'll add this to the Need Changes list for fx35/36, to review.

I just checked the latest Firefox 35 Beta 8 and you can now remove search engines via the Search panel, by selecting a search engine and clicking the Remove button that becomes activated. Joni just updated the article to add a new Remove search engines section for fx35.
