замкнено Yoog Search has taken over Firefox as default search

Firefox version: 3.0.4 Operating system: Windows XP

I have done all the obvious things to get rid of it i.e. manage search engines, etc. Uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. Also made changes in about:config which show yoog search instead of Google. Also I've run all spyware - AVG, SuperAntiSpyware, McAfeeVirus, etc. Please don't suggest the obvious solutions. I've done searches online and see a few others having the same problem (as of Dec. 3) with no solutions offered by anyone. I have tried changing the .js files called prefs.js and user.js which show the yoog info. I'm able to change the files (in Dreamweaver) however when Firefox is restarted they are automatically changed back to yoog search as the default. This is only in Firefox - not IE. Firefox will also close the window by itself and disappear from the task bar. When I try to open it again, it says it's already open, so this is something malicious. I hope someone out there can help!!
Thanks.

Post No.7

Have the same Yoog problem when I was testing rogue malware on virtual machine

I Normally don't post anything regarding to other peoples issues, but today i will give my input. If you seach for Yoog on your computer using "search companion" then click on your hard drives to search in. Then click on more advanced options and enable search system folder and search hidden files and folders and search subfolders. SEARCH: YOOG
you will probably find alot of yoog files, some that are harmless cookies of you searching how to fix the problem... BUT the file you need to remove is called Yoog search.XML and there is a space between yoog and search. IT IS a search plugin for MOZILLA firefox. And can be manually removed if you go to C:\Documents and Settings\Ross!\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\dtzc2wbt.default\searchplugins Anyways something like that.. I know this works because i had same problem and this fixed my issue once i deleted it. No more Yoog! Holla!

Just simply system restore back to a time you didn't have Yoog!!!

Yoog is easy to remove!

1) In Firefox click on the search engine drop down bar and choose manage search engines
2) Select Yoog and remove it.

I personally use Dogpile as my search engine.

I would also recommend a few utilities for you:
Glary Utilities is FREE and it rocks.
Adaware of course.
Auslogic defragmenter.

All of these are FREE. I usually download them at Cnet.com

NONE of these suggestions work. Yoog just reinstalls itself after a reboot. I've been using Google Chrome lately but I miss the Firefox extensions....

For all these people posting their "solutions"... I guess you're trying to be helpful but c'mon! Managing search engines doesn't get rid of yoog nor does deleting the XML file as was suggested a couple of posts back. If it was that easy, this thread wouldn't have been started.

It has now infiltrated IE as well. I believe it is connected to pop adds which on my computer is "Contextual Dcads" I have deleted this in all it's forms as well and despite all my spyware removers, registry cleaners, virus scans, etc. nothing has detected it. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled FF a couple of times to no avail. I believe this is much more malicious than it appears - for one thing I notice that when I mess with any of the files connected with yoog - for instance the prefs.js or user.js files or deleting the XML file, my whole computer will slow down to a snails crawl and gets hung up to the point where I can do nothing. Also someone suggested restoring the computer to an earlier date before yoog - I tried that back in early December when I first got infected with yoog - it wouldn't work. I believe that is connected to yoog as well...

Try this then:

start/run - type regedit

Then under edit/find type yoog

Delete all registry entries. It should be gone.

If not try adaware and the Glary utilities I mentioned. I had the stupid Yoog garbage this morning and it is GONE.

I saw I had a hijacked search bar so I ran Adaware, Glary utilities, did the regedit and deleted it under manage search engines.

Reboot and it will be back! Christ enough of this already. Amateur hour is long over.

I have rebooted several times and I do not have it any longer.

If you do - I am sorry mine is cleared.

You know for your obvious kindness and appreciation for others helping - I won't be back again. So solve it on your own and format C:/

I am NOT an amateur. I happen to do this for a living but if it makes you feel better whining - have fun.

I don't understand, if you system restore back to just before you first noticed the problem Yoog will be gone!! simple.

I do not have it anymore therefore this solution works!!

Hi there,
Had this Yoog problem since 25/12, seem to have resolved it since yesterday (so I cross my fingers). I have tried about everything, what seems to have worked is similar to what Ross way saying: I did a advanced search on yoog (no extension so it takes everything) and did find 5 or 6 files, some XML. Switched off my internet before deleting all those files: as it comes back automatically, I thought it was in relation to being online. Then I went back to FFox offline, checked each and every place where yoog could be, sure enough found it in cookies and add-ons authorisations (of course I never gave that authorisation, and all cookies are erased - or should be - when I close Ffox).

I don' t know if it is related or not but I also had ads pop-ups at the same time. Eventhough I don't use IE they were IE popups. When I would close them the computer would swith off. I did an advanced research on video files, I found loads of "whatevername.dat" files, all of "VIDEO CD file" type, in the most odd place including my anti-virus. I deleted every of them as well, thinking anyway I probably would have to reformat my HD, so why not? It worked.

Yoog has not come back, the pop-ups have not come back - so far! - but now I can't anymore download .exe files: I needed a software from Nokia and can't get it, FF downloads message say "this download has been blocked by your security system", I have no idea how to change that, I have checked everything and everything seems fine. Any idea?

Thanks

Ok so this is going to seem sorta dumb, but it is really easy to get rid of it. i'll do this step by step.

Step 1: Uninstall Firefox.

Step 2: Remove all of the files for firefox (located in the uninstall window.)

Step 3: Remove C:\Documents and Settings\(Whatever your current user is)\Application Data\Mozilla
-Delete the whole folder

Step 4: Remove C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
-Also Delete the entire folder

Step 5: Reinstall Firefox.

I have done this. Restarted my computer. Closed firefox numerious times to see if it comes back ... and no sign of it... yet....

FIXING YOOG!!

Hi there,
To fix the "yoog" problem, open a new tab, type "about:config" in the address.
Accept "I will be carefull"
scroll down to: browser.search.defaultenginefilename, you will find it set on"Define by user", value: "Yoog".
Right click on the status and select "reset" to go back to default, value will go back to Google.
Continue scrolling down, you will find a few more (I think there were 4 or 5) with "yoog" as value, including "keyword.url".
Each time, right click to reset to default.

Good luck!

Yoog is a very bad trojan that you get when searching porn,...or other stuff,...try this,...user.js : user_pref("browser.search.selectedEngine", "Google");
user_pref("keyword.url", "http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=");
user_pref("keyword.enabled", true);

Still no answer from Firefox? Guess its time to flush this turd...!

hey um. i found a solution i think. there was an author on a website. wait let me try 2 find it...
um. sorry 2 author but i cant find it.
let me tell you what i think were the directions: author had different ad thing

so umm:
go to system32 from C:
in there, there should be a .exe file with the name of the ad thing. mine was MileHighAds. i found a cont_milehighads.exe file, so i deleted that.

then:
go to C:\Program Files\Mozilla\Components and there should be something again with the ad name i found some file which was milehighad. (forgot extension im guessing it could be opened with notepad).

then go to recycle bin and permanently delete both of those.
Then open mozilla firefox. go to manage search engines and remove yoog search.Set google as default.
then close mozilla and open again.

This is where it was fixed for me.
Dont really ask me anymore, im not really a tech guy :(
if this helps i would like someone to find the original author of a post like this.
Cant remember the site.
also the author said if there was some Koso or Toso or something like that .dll file to delete that as well..

Ok, thanks :)
And shame on the Mozilla Team. Not helping us. Microsoft is soo much better at that.
And also IE has some bugs 2 i think for some people...

Hi there,

I have posted an answer to this a while ago on the Forum.
Here is again the solution:
in the address, you type: about: config
you click on the "I will be careful, I promise" (or something) button.
Here comes a list. You scroll down and will find the yoog engine registered in several places (I think it was 4 or 5). It should actually be quite obvious as it is in bold because it has been changed. You need to go on each of those lines and click (or double click) on "status" to get the "default" status, so "Google" (or your usual search engine) will replace "yoog".
It is not complicated at all, you'll see.
BTW, Firefox is not a commercial site, there is no one there paid to reply, it is all volonteers.

Good luck
B

click add remove remove firefox, delete the folder in your program files, restart computer click IE on your upper rightside theres a search option, click down arrow, change your default search engine, clikck ok,click it again then delete yoog.restart your computer then there you have it. its gone

My IE is infected as well. Can't get rid of it from there either. Not just a Firefox problem.
