normal WMV Videos Disappeared From Firefox3

I use Firefox 99% of the time for all browsing. I create simple web pages for clients to review. These contain WMV videos which normally show in Firefox as the standard Media Player window with controls.

A while back I upgraded to Firefox3 (whenever it became available). Now on 3 different systems with Firefox3 (2 Win2000 and 1 XP x64), when I go to view one of these pages, the area where the Media Player window should show is blank. The videos show fine in IE.

I have changed nothing that I can recall so I'm not sure what's causing this? As far as I can tell, the Media Player plugin is installed.

How do I fix this?

hi just looked at your plugins and wmv is not installed, go here:http://port25.technet.com/pages/windows-media-player-firefox-plugin-download.aspx

Thanks very much for this info... but I'm having a problem.

That download, when attempting to install, says 'not a valid Win32 application'. I am using Win2000 on my system.

It appears that plugin won't install for me.

The question is, how is it that this Win2000 system has been using Firefox and seeing WMVs just fine for ages? Same with multiple other systems I have?

Is this something that changed when I installed Firefox3 and it was working before with Firefox2?

Thanks again.

Your plugins list shows that you have the Mozilla ActiveX plugin installed.
The ActiveX plugin is not compatible with Firefox 2 and 3 and you should remove it.
See ActiveX (MozillaZine KB) for instructions on how to remove it.

You have the old WMP plugin: Npdsplay.dll.
The new WMP plugin only works on Win XP SP2 and above.
See also Windows_Media_Player (MozillaZine KB)

Thanks for the ideas.

I went and installed the Media Player Plugin that was for XP and above, only on one of my systems that was XP x64 and it made NO difference... where WMVs were displayed for years with the Media Player interface is now a blank, empty spot.

On the Win2000 systems... I have removed the ActiveX plugin per the instructions and that made no difference... a blank empty spot where the WMVs used to be.

That other link leads me to the Media Player 9 download (no plugin for Firefox). I already have Media Player and it works fine. Why would I need to reinstall Media Player 9 if it works fine and I have done nothing to change my systems.

Again, I have about 25 computers with various OS on them (Win2000, XP, XP x64) and all were displaying WMVs in webpages in Firefox just fine for years. Then I go to view one of my webpages with a WMV and poof! No WMVs.

Baffling.

As mentioned above, the newer Media Player plugin will not install on a Win2000 system. The older Media Player plugin is, and has been, installed.

The only solution to this has been to edit the webpages (that have existed for years without the need for this edit) and add the info into the page for the WMVs. Once this is done, every system will properly show WMVs as it had been doing for years without this edit.

Again the mystery is why, all of a sudden, this info became required.

Thanks!
