I have tried everything that is suggested to try to fix this problem. I even enabled everything for the time being and I disabled my firewall. The only weird thing about my settings is that I do not have "Launching applications and unsafe files"; I only have "Launching programs and files in IFRAME". Can you help? I can't set the unsafe files to enable because it is nowhere to be found in my settings. This is true for my Mozilla, my internet Explorer, and my options straight from my control panel. HELP!!!

You will only get that setting if you have installed IE7.
If you never used IE7 in the past then the setting should be OK I think. Otherwise you have to reinstall IE7 to get access to that setting again.

What happens if you try to download and save an exe file?

I uninstalled it a while ago and now I cannot install it due to the same error popping up. I'm stuck.

I am having the SAME EXACT problem. It's driving me mad. Not only can I not download a .exe file, but I can't download ANYTHING.

Halp us! :(

same problem!

So I ended up using a friend's computer to download the file and I saved it to a flash drive. I plugged in the drive and launched it on my own computer and TA-DA! But I'm still upset that I cannot just download files directly to my own computer.

Did you take a look at the manual method with the Registry Editor?
Unable to save or download files - MozillaZine Knowledge Base

For advanced users: Another solution is to edit the Windows registry so that the value name 1806 in both of these registry keys has a value data of 1 ("Prompt"): [32] [33]

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3\
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3\

Yes.

  1. the "Launching applications and unsafe files" option does not exist.
  2. Go to "Internet Options -> Security -> "Reset all zones to default level." The "Reset all zones to default level" does not exist.

Re-installing internet Explorer? How do you do that exactly? That's the one I have not tried. I can run it on my computer, but it is not in my "Add and Remove Programs" lists. So I can't modify it from there.

Also HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3\ and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3\ do have a value data of 1.

Just fixed my Internet Explorer. You go to "Tools" ---> "Reset Web Settings." Though my Firefox still doesn't let me download.

I've resetted the IE7 Web Settings, but I'm still having the same problem. The only way I can get around this is to hold down the ALT key when I click on a file link in which case it will start downloading in firefox download manager. I am using the Adobe Acrobat Reader as a test file to download. It will download fine in Opera and IE7, but not in FF (unless I hold down ALT).

The other frustration is if I'm trying to download a file that is linked via a PHP link (example some torrent files) holding down the ALT key will only download the PHP file and not the actual link it s directing it to.

I work browes Firefox. Our internet bind download *.exe, *.rar, *.zip and so detail. Wath kind of
download this programm must. I am help you

My god this is driving me nuts too.  All i've got is that it only happens with FFox 3 and, yes, that you need IE 7 installed so that the option 'launcing applications and unsafe files' magically appears in the 'misc' list. The only other thing I have found is a page of garbled text that the 'pro's' use.

Having the same probs as you L and all I want is bloody Itunes. Let me know if you have had any luck with it and I'll do the same. About to start to find a solution now.

Oh, also sent crappy message to firefox to say this is not what I need.

Oh and Meni, no offense mate, but even if you could help me I'm not sure I'd be able to follow your directions..... if you know what I mean ;)

Try this
Found this on Microsofts support site:
You cannot open a new Internet Explorer window or nothing occurs after you click a link

To resolve this problem in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:
1. Quit all programs that are running.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
4. When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message, click OK.

If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file names below):
• Shdocvw.dll
• Actxprxy.dll
• Oleaut32.dll
• Mshtml.dll
• Browseui.dll
• Shell32.dll

Worked for me.

This is a MOZILLA FIREFOX problem, not IE7. I cannot even download IE to try to fix my problem because it is a .exe file!

Laura,

I know that. Just try it. It will resolve your IE problem AND your FF problem. For it is really fixing your internet settings which both FF and IE use. Also you do not need IE7 to do that. I had IE 5 when I did that. It fixed it.

Hey guys - all this file shifting and reading was doing my head in. I also had the problem of not being able to download any exe file.

Laura - do you have a torrent driver? I already had 'utorrent' to download films etc so I did a torrent search for IE7 and the new ffox and found a few hits. Downloading them as a torrent doesn't seem to get blocked, my setup files appeared and I upgraded both ie and ffox. Everything is working fine now.

Let me know if you need the torrent and i'll post it.

Mackyxx

I don't have IE PERIOD. All I have is Firefox and i cannot download ANY version of IE because of this .exe problem. So I cannot fix IE because I do not have it at all.

Macky-

I didn't think of that. I was going to just find IE on a friend's computer and use my flash drive to install it on mine and then try to fix this whole mess. I don't have a torrent driver, but it's worth a shot. Thanks :)
