request for more information Need to export bookmark file to a spreadsheet to reorganize bookmarks

I need to reorganize a bookmark file with over 100 bookmarks and several dozen categories. I want to export the existing bookmarks (my name and the URL) to a spreadsheet or database file so that I can resort the file. After reorganizing the file, ideally I would like to be able to import the reorganized file into FF3.

Exporting the existing bookmark file as an HTML file does not solve the problem. The exported file does not show URLs and contains extraneous data.

I'm not sure Excel or another spreadsheet program is the best tool, because it will not be aware of folders... Anyway, if you want to extract the bookmarks as a list you probably can do it in a two-step process:

(1) Export your bookmarks to the customary HTML file format;

(2) Open that file in Firefox and run a script to extract the data to a new page in the desired format.

For the second, I realize this is a rather crude tool, but it's what I have time for this afternoon. Paste the following into the URL bar of the bookmarks.html page and press Enter:

javascript:x=document.getElementsByTagName("A");y=window.open();for(n=0;n

After 10 seconds, or depending on the number of bookmarks and speed of your CPU, some other amount of time, a new window will display with a jumble of link data. To access the formatting, you need to copy not this mess but the generated source of the page.

Press Ctrl+A to select the entire page.

Right-click and choose View Selection Source.

When the source window opens, press Ctrl+C to copy.

To set up your destination application, e.g., MS Excel, widen the A and B columns to something that might be readable with tons of text in them, such as 150px. Then right-click A1 and use Paste Special, Unicode Text or Text to drop in the data.

Phew! (I'm sure someone will come along and say, oh, you just need Extension X.)

Now, as for getting it back into Firefox. I don't have any ideas for that part.

Really good solution.
Worked very well for me.
Thanks a lot.

Just found this solution - worked a treat
Thanks very much.

I just found this solution. It's great! However, I was wondering if there is a way to also generate the bookmark folder information in a column too such as which folder that the bookmark was contained in.

Hi,

I do not quite understand this procedure.
When I copy+paste the java code in the address bar of my bookmark.html opened in FF, nothing happens for me... :(
Please provide some more explanation, if possible...

Many thanks in advance! :)
