solved AVG (Yahoo) toolbar isn't playing nice, won't uninstall

I've tried avoiding installing the AVG toolbar in Mozilla, but it has managed to sneak in somehow. This is a variant of the Yahoo toolbar. I am now running Firefox 3.5 beta. If I go to Tools/Addons, then AVG Security Toolbar is greyed out. It won't let me Uninstall or Enable or even press Options. There is nothing in the Windows Add/Remove Programs that will uninstall it. Actually, the Yahoo toolbar is gone. It is no longer at the top of the Firefox window. However, it is still somewhat active. If I type in a partial address in the address bar, like just "cnn", Firefox used to take me directly to www.cnn.com. Now I get an AVG Search results window listing CNN.com as the first hit. Powered by Yahoo, of course.
Does anyone know how to get rid of this garbage?

Thanks,
DaveT

Extensions installed:

none are active (all are greyed out saying they are not compatible)

Hey, that's great! I'll mark this thread as solved.

Thanks for posting back with the outcome.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no, this didn't help. There were only two folders there. One was a known extension for something else, the other was one of the cryptically names folders but was already empty. Removing the empty folder had no effect.

See Profiles: How to find your profile
"Application Data" in XP and "AppData" in Vista are hidden folders, use %APPDATA% in the File name field.

See also Show hidden files and folders (MozillaZine (KB))
Go to: Control Panel > Folder Options > "View" tab > under "Hidden files and folders", select "Show hidden files and folders".
You might also want to un-check the box "Hide extensions for known file types", so that you can see the file extensions for all files.

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\\
Vista: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\\

Copy and Paste this code in the Code field in the "Tools > Error Console" and click the Evaluate button to see the location of the profile folder.

alert(Components.classes["@mozilla.org/file/directory_service;1"].getService(Components.interfaces.nsIProperties).get("ProfD", Components.interfaces.nsIFile).path);

If I go to Tools/Addons, then AVG Security Toolbar is greyed out. It won't let me Uninstall or Enable or even press Options.

So then it's disabled. (Since this is an AVG product, try AVG Support for uninstall help).

Disabling or uninstalling a toolbar or other extension may still leave preference settings behind that need to be reset. In your case, it looks like keyword searches in Firefox are still set to the AVG/Yahoo engine.

Try resetting preferences, either via Firefox's Safe Mode ("reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults") or try resetting just the Keyword.url preference in about:config

(In Firefox, type about:config in the address bar, find Keyword.url in the list of preferences, right-click on that entry and select Reset)

Thanks! The Keyword.url reset was the trick I was looking for! Things are back to normal.
