Since Microsoft upgraded their Windows Live Hotmail service last night (30-10-2008) I cannot write new messages or reply to messages. The message body (where I want to write) is greyed out. Restarting did not help. I assume this is a Microsoft problem but I post it here anyway.

I am having the exact same problem and am helpless in figuring out how to solve it.

Ok I tried the same on a windows pc here at my office. Same problem with Firefox 3.03. Downloaded Opera on that same pc (version 9.6). Now I cannot even click on anything in Opera when I log in to hotmail. Internet Explorer works fine.

Before today everything was fine. The clean new layout of Windows Live only seems to like IE. :-(

problems like this will probably hasten the wipeout of microsoft.

who did the testing of this new UI which fails to correctly support many browsers?

although it is unbelievable, nothing is surprising me after MS Vista anyway...

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 here and the same problem happens to me with Firefox 3.0.3, but only with an account recently created. The other one (> 6 years) is still working fine. It seems not to have upgraded automatically (yet?).

Hi,
i have the same with OpenSuse 11 and FF 3.03, Opera and Konqueror.

any news on this error yet? i'm having the same problem (with Firefox 3.0.3 on Ubuntu)

I'm having the same problem. Is there any way to switch to the old hotmail?

Same problem. Microsoft is retarded.

Same problem here on both i386 and amd64 3.03 firefox/iceweasel (Ubuntu and Debian original.)

It looks like MS still ignores linux really exists.

Lots of errors on error console.

Hi, I found the answer on the web.

MS dictates what browsers to use again.

It is a surprise that hotmail live locks out a browser as popular as firefox. Is it really lag of testing or what?

Anyway we may work around that by faking firefox as another browser

Please use the "User Agent Switcher" addon, create a new user agent according to this (none of the default agents work with hotmail live) :

Cheers

same here, firefox 3.0.2 on fedora9 - unbelievable, cancelling my hotmail subscription.

yup...same here. i guess they forgot about the writing the email thing while they were designing all those grandma's-tea-cozy skins. they should really hire some humans over there... at least this is a good excuse to finally make the switch to gmail. FF 3.03, linux

I use FF3 and have no issues responding to or writing mail. Any reason for that?

Same here, on Kubuntu Intrepid.
If I set User agent to IE 7 windows vista, I not bothered any more with the "update your browser" screen, but all I can do is to access my email reception box (I can't read my mails, not to mention replying).
If I set it to opera 9.25 (Windows Vista), I can read my emails, but not reply or compose a new one (everything below the recipient address is greyed out).
I suppose MS has decided that there was only one OS and only one net browser outhere ... a shame !

A kind of solution :to change the value in FF config :
In the URL address bar type : about:config
Confirm that you want to access the config
Then locate the entry general.useragent.vendor
Change the value to Firefox

This works on (K)Ubuntu Hardy/Intrepid, where the original value is "Ubuntu" ...
HTH

same s*it here.. I HATE M$$$$$$$$

Same problem here..... Can't write emails, main message box greyed out.

same problem with mandriva and firefox, I cannot write messages in hotmail or reply in hotmail. I was getting a message infrequently before saying upgrade your browser... now every time I log in (even though firefox is one on the list)

Same crap overhere. http://mobile.live.com/hm/ works for me :-).

Same here... My hotmail (it's old) worked fine untill yesterday. Today (05 november) it's screwed... Firefox can open mails but not send any, Konqueror can't even open the mails (but it opens the mailbox). Stupid stuff...
