This is an issue thread. Read about them here
  • Description: Settings (not bookmarks, just preferences) not saving. Often noticed when users can't change their homepage or keep getting the "You've just been updated to Firefox 3.0.X" tab that appears on startup.
  • Reports: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
  • Status: Needs lead
  • Information needed:
    • Security software installed?
  • Possible Workarounds: A fresh profile has worked for some people.
  • Observations:
    • We have Preferences are not saved but that only talks about resetting user.js
    • The above article is also hard to find given the most common symptom is stray tabs which isn't easily linked to broken preferences.
    • The MZ article seems to have more workarounds.

I just made some changes to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved which someone may want to incorporate into the Preferences are not saved article.

Cww,

I made another change to http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved to add that the Firefox Safe Mode option, Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults can be used as an alternative to replacing or renaming the prefs.js file (ref). That might be easier for Windows users but, on the other hand, if people are already being told to check for a read-only prefs.js file they might as well just go ahead and delete the file. Just thought I'd mention it.

Anyway, I made a minor change to your edit of Preferences are not saved (The page in the Firefox Updated tab states, You’ve been updated to the latest version of Firefox based on this and other forum posts.)

I have this problem with every update: Firefox Updated, Stumbleupon Changelog, Interclue Updated, etc. I do not have the user.js file mentioned. Is there something that can be done? Thank you, Rainyfield at msn.com
